Toy Tuesday: The Best Clone Wars Toys

The seventh and final season of The Clone Wars drops this week on Disney+, a staggering twelve years after the series premiered. It’s fair to say that this computer-animated cartoon did a lot of heavy lifting in bringing the Star Wars mythology to a new generation, cleaning up the mess of the prequel trilogy and filling in the gaps between Episode II and Episode III. The show also introduced a number of new characters into the universe, and of course had a ton of toys. Here are our picks for the best.

Clone Commander Fox Figure

Clone Commander Fox Figure

The leader of the Coruscant Guard, Commander Fox was an elite trooper tasked with keeping the Galactic Senate safe against all threats. His unrelenting bravery led to him becoming one of the most decorated soldiers in the Republic’s military. Designated CC-1010, Fox was one of thousands of clones of bounty hunter Jango Fett. After Palpatine took command and established the Empire, Fox met an unseemly end at the hands of Darth Vader. This Black Series figure is richly detailed, stands six inches tall and comes with multiple weapons.

Ahsoka Tano Plush Figure

Ahsoka Tano Plush Figure

One of the breakthrough characters of the Clone Wars series, Ahsoka Tano is Anakin Skywalker’s Padawan, being trained in the ways of the Jedi before his eventual fall to the dark side. She’s an orange-skinned Togrutan who started out a little one-note but quickly grew into one of the coolest characters in the Star Wars extended universe, in no small part due to her bad-ass Zatoichi-style reverse lightsaber grip. While we wouldn’t use “cuddly” as an adjective for the character herself, this really charming plush rendition certainly earns it. She stands over a foot tall!

Mace Windu Figure

Mace Windu Figure

One of the most respected Jedi in history, Mace Windu had the unenviable role of serving on the Council during the rise of the Galactic Empire. Forced by duty to advise Emperor Palpatine despite his growing concerns about the consolidation of power in the former Republic, he was eventually killed when Anakin intervened to protect the Sith Lord, whom Windu had bested. The Clone Wars features a bunch of high-quality Mace Windu action that really shows the many facets of this character. This figure is sculpted to match the slightly abstracted look of the cartoon and comes with his signature purple lightsaber.

LEGO MagnaGuard Starfighter

LEGO MagnaGuard Starfighter

Piloted by the fearsome battle droids that share its name, the MagnaGuard was how the wheezing Sith General Grievous’s personal bodyguards got around during the Clone Wars. These Rogue-class fighters were equipped with a pair of vicious laser cannons on each wing. The design was originally created for Revenge of the Sith and even 3D modeled, but not used in the film. It was brought out of mothballs for The Clone Wars, where it was also flown by bounty hunter Cad Bane. Now you can build your own and fly it through the unfriendly skies of the Empire.

Kit Fisto Action Figure

Kit Fisto Action Figure

One of several unfortunately-named characters in the Star Wars universe, we first met Kit Fisto at the Battle of Geonosis, where he led a platoon of Jedi against the droid army. He got a massively upgraded profile in the Clone Wars series, becoming a major supporting character. He was regarded by other Jedi as one of the most gifted swordsmen of all time, but his skill with the lightsaber wasn’t enough to save him from Emperor Palpatine. Remember the good times with this Hasbro Black Series figure, which boasts incredible paint detailing and lots of poseability.

Anakin's Jedi Starfighter

Anakin’s Jedi Starfighter

One of the biggest complaints that people had about the prequel trilogy was that Anakin’s transformation from fresh-faced podracer to genocidal Sith lord seemed a little unearned. It just wasn’t an emotional pivot that George Lucas could make believable along with all the other stuff that was happening. That’s one of the major selling points of The Clone Wars – it gives the future Vader the breathing room he needs to show the darkness at his core. Oh, and he also gets to fly around in this pretty fresh spaceship. This Hasbro replica splits into a pair of autonomous vehicles for double the trouble.

Cad Bane Funko Pop

Cad Bane Funko Pop

The Force stuff is all well and good, but our personal favorite Star Wars stuff happens around the margins, the assorted smugglers, bounty hunters and scumbags just trying to get by in a universe that seems hellbent on tearing itself apart. One dope Clone Wars supporting character is bounty hunter Cad Bane, who stepped up to take the top slot after Jango Fett’s death. The Duros gunman was known for his solid track record against Jedi, having worked for some of the worst people in the galaxy on a number of jobs. And yes, they made a Funko Pop of him because he just rules that much.

General Grievous Model Kit

General Grievous Model Kit

One of the major bad guys of The Clone Wars, General Grievous is a Kaleesh warlord who enhanced his body with numerous cybernetic enhancements, becoming primarily mechanical in his quest to turn himself into the ultimate swordsman. With two extra arms he could wield four lightsabers at once, making him more than a match for any foe. This is a plastic model kit in the classic Japanese style, with snap-together pieces and lots of articulation. You can build him with either two or four arms and pose him in a bunch of action stances with the aid of an included stand.

Admiral Wullf Yularen Figure

Admiral Wullf Yularen Figure

We’ve always wondered about the people who served in the Galactic Republic as things started to go south and drift into the fascism of the Empire. How did they deal with watching the trappings of democracy slide away under the thumb of Palpatine? It’s very difficult to not make any contemporary political analogies here in this humble toy roundup. Wullf Yularen was a Coruscanti male assigned to Anakin Skywalker’s fleet during the Clone Wars, and eventually came to head up the Imperial Security Bureau. This figure comes with a holo-com table so he can check in with central command.

S.H. Figuarts Clone Trooper Figure

S.H. Figuarts Clone Trooper Figure

You can’t have a clone war without clones, and the massive vat-grown army of the declining Galactic Republic gave them a tremendous advantage over the separatists. If you want to pick up what is in our opinion the single best clone trooper figure on the market, it has to be Bandai’s S.H. Figuarts Phase 2. Standing just under six inches tall, this guy is made with the highest possible production fidelity, his armor shining and smooth and offering tons of poseability. As expected, he comes with interchangeable hands and a pair of weapons, a blaster pistol and rifle.

Separatist Droid Tri-Fighter

Separatist Droid Tri-Fighter

One of my favorite things about Star Wars is how all of the technology and design in the galaxy really looks like it was created by multiple different species evolving in parallel and then forced to contend with each other. There’s no rhyme or reason to it, and it’s great. It’s like going to a big city and seeing all the different restaurants. The Separatists, ostensibly the bad guys in the Clone Wars, had some seriously slick rides like this Tri-Fighter, a heavily armed ship that was designed for dogfighting in the vacuum of space. The toy version comes with launchable missiles and a pair of ball-bodied battle droids for personal engagements.
