Last year, superstar comic artist Jen Bartel (Marvel, Blackbird, the internet at large) made waves when she announced a collaboration series with adidas. Bartel designed two exclusive adidas Speedfactory AM4s to coincide with the releases of Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame. The former was modeled after the titular superhero and sold out almost instantaneously, both online and in its limited store release. The latter took inspiration from the Thanos and Infinity Gauntlet and did similarly well in sales.
This month, Bartel is back in the sneaker game – albeit for the Distinguished Competition this time around. With the release of Birds of Prey earlier this month (which, box office numbers be damned, is a delight) footwear icons PUMA and Foot Locker have teamed up with Bartel for a sneaker designed by the artist that pays homage to both the movie and specifically its protagonist, Harley Quinn.
Announced via Bartel’s Instagram, the silhouette the design adorns is a PUMA Love, which is a clean, simple low-top design reminiscent of the classic PUMA Clyde and Suede. It’s primarily built from a white base, both the sole and the upper. While you may expect a Harley Quinn sneaker to rock the gaudy colors associated with her original outfits (think bright maroons, deep blues, etc.) this sneaker takes a departure from that design sensibility, instead opting to off-set the white leather and rubber with a rainbow-patterned Formstrip (think PUMA’s version of the Nike Swoosh).
The laces are also a killer touch – they’re designed to mimic CAUTION tape, an appropriate homage to a villain-turned-antihero. But the best part has to be the shoe tag, which features a rubber hammer, Harley’s weapon of choice.
Once again, Jen Bartel proves herself to have a great eye for sneaker design. More brands would be wise to pull her in for projects like these, which not only look great but draw in a whole new generation of fans into the sneaker world. If you’re looking to pick up Jen’s Birds of Prey PUMA sneaker, you’ll have to hit up Foot Locker Women’s (the shoe is only available in women’s sizing, so if your feet are on the larger side or you’re looking to convert from mens/unisex sizing go one and a half sizes up). They’ll have the shoe available online and in a select few brick and mortar locations in New York (Herald Square and Times Square) beginning February 21. Good luck, Puddins.
