Disney CEO Bob Iger Steps Down

Bob Iger is the CEO that guided modern-day Disney into the frightening entertainment monopoly it is today. Under his tenure Disney not only grew its own valuable brands but acquired a plethora of others including Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel, and Fox. His dark work finished, Iger has just announced he is stepping down, with a different Disney Bob (Bob Chapek) moving up from the theme park business into the vacant CEO role. Meanwhile, hopefully Iger gets back to writing more spicy gossip books.

Considering how Disney now owns so much of the entertainment industry that it should be illegal, I’ll appreciate any glimpse into the Mouse House we can get just to make sure the people running it are still humans and not modern gods. Granted, it’s not like longtime CEO Bob Iger is going talk about how his company sucks or anything, but his new book The Ride of a Lifetime: Lessons Learned From 15 Years as CEO of The Walt Disney Company does offer some relatively spicy gossip about the family friendly giant.

We know you can’t wait to get to the Marvel and Star Wars tidbits, but for a second let’s just consider the world we’d be living in if Disney bought Twitter in 2016. The company was seriously considering purchasing our idiot president’s sounding board, but in the end decided the toxic social network was just more trouble than it’s worth. We totally understand.

Disney was also skittish about purchasing Marvel, a plan proposed by previous CEO Michael Eisner. However, other executives worried that the superhero universe was “too edgy” and violent for Disney’s unified brand. Once the decision was made though, Iger reached out to Apple founder and Disney board member Steve Jobs to help convince Marvel CEO (and human garbage) Ike Perlmutter to accept the deal. Jobs would later tell Iger that he thought Iron Man 2 sucked.

And further confirming that George Lucas is way cooler than Star Wars, Iger talks about how the auteur felt “betrayed” when Disney decided to go in a new direction with its Star Wars sequel trilogy. When Lucas first saw The Force Awakens, he was disappointed by how unoriginal it was in terms of plot and visuals. And he’s right!

For more more you’ll just have to read the whole book and check out out Iger’s larger interview with The New York Times. For more on Disney history check out these upcoming remasters of classic Disney video games.
