Gamescom 2020 may be entirely digital as German government bans public events through August 31

The German government has banned all public events through the end of August, which could lead to the postponement of gamescom 2020 or a completely digital event.

According to a report on German outlet Games Wirtschaft (thanks, resetera), the government has banned all public events until August 31, which could see the postponement of gamescom 2020 despite plans to possibly continue with the live event after an evaluation period.

The annual event is set to take place August 25-29.

Organizers of the event previously stated plans have been updated for the event, and all digital formats will go on as planned, and an “evaluation” will take place in mid-May to see if the show can go on as planned on-site based on the latest developments of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the previous announcement,  gamescom: Opening Night Live and other streams would be “significantly expanded and new modules added.”

This means gamescom will “definitely take place,” at least in a digital format, and if the German government has banned all public events, this could mean gamescom may indeed not take place on-site this year unless organizers postpone it to a later date.
