The Assassin’s Creed Valhalla tease in The Division 2 was “a complete coincidence”

If you’ve played The Division 2, you might have noticed an easter egg that seemingly foreshadowed the recent announcement of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

The teaser was an in-game poster that depicted what looked like a Norse god holding up an Apple of Eden, one of the Assassin’s Creed series’ mysterious objects of power. Above the figure was the word “Valhalla”.

Back when it was discovered, Kotaku reported on the tease while also revealing the existence of a Viking-themed Assassin’s Creed game, codenamed Kingdom. That game now has a name: Valhalla. But Ubisoft says the person who made the poster in The Division 2 couldn’t have been aware of the next Assassin’s Creed game.

Ubisoft Montreal’s narrative director Darby McDevitt said this in a recent Stevivor interview:

“You know what’s crazy about that? That was a complete coincidence. It’s just because The Division is made in Sweden, and they just wanted to put some stuff in there. Whoever the artist was, they just wanted to put in some of their Nordic culture. It had nothing to do with us.

“I don’t even think this game had a name at the time. We always work with a codename, and we always have a few ideas for names. We decide on one eventually, but that was very, very funny. The image that’s in the poster has nothing to do with our game. Once you play Valhalla, our game, you’ll see that there’s nothing to do with the poster that was in The Division 2.”

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s map lets you visit the four kingdoms of England and visit famous sites such as Stonehenge, as well as some of Norway. It also features playable Viking rap battles.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla releases this Holiday for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.
