This year’s Opening Night Live will take place a few days later than initially planned.
The event’s coordinator Geoff Keighley confirmed today in a tweet that the show – which kicks off Gamescom each year – will stream digitally on August 27 through to August 30. Keighley previously announced the all-digital show would go live on August 24.
“Quick update,” writes Keighley. “@gamescom Opening Night Live will now take place live on August 27 and kick off 3 days of @gamescom 2020. We’re planning a spectacular show that will also be the grand finale of @summergamefest.”

“Since the world’s largest event for computer and video games cannot take place on location in Cologne this year due to the corona pandemic, digital formats and platforms are therefore being continually expanded,” reads a statement released today.
“From August 27 to 30, there will be lots of new shows, a greatly expanded gamescom now platform as a contenthub for all the latest insights and news, and digital devcom’s wide-ranging program for game developers and other trade visitors as well as so much more.”
Gamescom 2020 will go ahead digitally from August 25-29.
Like all major game conventions this year, Gamescom has had to adapt following the coronavirus outbreak which has forced many events to be either cancelled or go digital. As reported in April, the ban on events throughout Cologne has prohibited a physical Gamescom from happening this year.
“Unfortunately, gamescom will under no circumstances take place on site in Cologne this year,” reads a statement from the Gamescom team, made last month. “Just like many of you, we are disappointed, because as the gamescom team, we have been working on a wonderful gamescom 2020 for months, just like the many exhibitors. However, it is also quite clear to us that, in the face of the corona pandemic, we must stand united. This means that we must all be considerate of each other and reduce the risk of infection.”
Opening Night Live debuted in 2019 as a co-production with Keighley and Gamescom.
