Half-Life: Alyx’s mod tools have arrived.
Valve has released the official set of mod tools for Half-Life: Alyx, and opened a Steam Workshop page dedicated to all of the game’s mods. The tools are still in beta, but the release is significant for a number of reasons.
The most obvious is that creators can now dig deeper into the game’s code and modify it to create new experiences, or mess around with joke mods. They also provide unprecedented access to the latest version of Valve’s Source Engine, which could prove useful down the line if modders decide to port an old game to it, or recreate classic levels within it.
Valve is particularly excited about the potential for sandbox-style creations based Alyx’s mechanics, a sort of Gary’s Mod for VR. The suite of tools comes with a new version of editor Hammer, as well as tools to create animation, models, textures, materials particles and, of course, Source Filmmaker.
The Half-Life: Alyx Workshop page already has several mods. Unsurprisingly, one of them is a lightsaber mod.
