15 Best Mods for Darkest Dungeon | Game Rant

2016’s Darkest Dungeon is a role-playing dungeon crawler game made by Red Hook Studios. It first launched for PC but has since been released on PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and iOS. This gothic style game has plenty of H.P Lovecraft vibes, as players battle through dungeons with their collection of heroes who can succumb to their insanity and gain negative traits, or even die from madness.

A sequel was announced last year, and while fans are still desperately waiting to get their hands on the new game, they can keep themselves happy by refreshing the original with some new mods for the PC version. There are plenty of mods out there to liven up Darkest Dungeon, check out our ten top picks for mods you should check out.

Updated November 23rd, 2020: Fans of Darkest Dungeon had two reasons to celebrate recently, firstly, the Kickstarter project for a board game version smashed its funding goal relatively quickly. Secondly, the highly anticipated sequel, Darkest Dungeon 2, has finally had an early access release window announced.

Next year, players will be able to get hands-on with the second title in the series, though early access will only be available via the Epic Games Store. In the meantime, players can keep themselves content with replaying the original, and what better way to keep it feeling fresh than by installing a few new mods.

15 Abysswalker

For fans of Dark Souls, the Abysswalker mod is sure to be a favorite as it adds a brand-new class based on Artorias from Dark Souls. The Abysswalker class has two different elements to it, each depending on the stance the character takes. It can be either a defender of the realm or a berserker under the influence of the abyss.

With this class, stress becomes abyssal corruption, but your character being stressed does have its benefits. The more stress the Abysswalker has, the more damage it does, as well as additional benefits, such as the Heroic Struggle special affliction.

14 Curio Hints

The Curio Hints mod is a nice little addition to make this very difficult game a little bit easier, though only very slightly. This mod allows you to see which items you need to use on curios before you interact with them, and if no item is displayed, you either don’t need to use one or interacting with it will have bad results for your party.

Given that every little bit of health that players can keep makes the difference between life or death, avoiding bad curios that will deal damage or inflict bad statuses on your party members will definitely help in some small way.

13 Epic Loading Screens

One of the downsides to Darkest Dungeon is that the loading screens aren’t the quickest out there. They’re also not exactly interesting, so players tend to get pretty bored staring at them. Fortunately, a dedicated fan has taken it upon themselves to liven up these loading screens.

The Epic Loading Screens Mod replaces the loading screens, ensuring they are in keeping with the dungeon that the player is waiting to enter. Additionally, the town loading screen has also changed and now portrays all the character classes in an epic battle scene.

12 True Heroes v2.0

For any players who struggle with the game, and that’s nothing to be ashamed of as Darkest Dungeon is notoriously difficult, there is a mod that can help to ease the difficulty. The True Heroes v2.0 Mod makes the game less about luck and more about rewarding players who strategize.

This mod does a variety of things that all add up to a smoother journey for players, including rebalancing heroes, increasing HP, increasing certain aspects of the inventory, increasing character resistances to negative stats, and a lot more.

11 Pitch Black Dungeon – Overhaul Mod

For any fans looking for a new experience in Darkest Dungeon, the Pitch Black Dungeon – Overhaul Mod is a perfect choice. This mod revamps the game to offer a familiar, yet more challenging experience for anyone brave enough to check it out.

This mod adds brand-new enemy subtypes, as well as thousands of additional encounters, a rebalanced economy, and a different loot system. The decisions made by players are even more important and so the player must be even more tactical when playing.

10 Bloodborne Highwayman Skin

If you fancy making one of your classes look like it’s from another gaming franchise, you’re in luck. The Bloodborne Highwayman Skin mod changes up the look of one of the fan-favorite classes, redesigning the Highwayman so that it more closely resembles The Hunter from Bloodborne.

Many fans are anticipating a Bloodborne sequel for the PlayStation 5 in the near future, with there being a few unanswered questions remaining that players would like the next game to shed some light on.

9 Better Trinkets

If you’re looking to make Darkest Dungeon a little more forgiving, the Better Trinkets mod ensures that all negative stats are removed from all trinkets within the game. Trinkets are equipable items, with party characters being able to equip two trinkets each.

Should a character fall in battle, you can loot their trinkets to keep them, or if your inventory is full, then you will regrettably lose them. Trinkets are found in dungeons, with some being obtained from specific enemies, and some are also available for purchase from the Nomad Wagon.

8 3 Trinkets

The base game limits the number of tickets that characters can equip to just two each, which is a shame as these equipable items can be rather handy. However, the 3 Trinkets mod allows you to add an additional slot for each character so you can maximize the benefits of these items.

Coupled with the Better Trinkets mod that was previously mentioned, the combination of the two could really help players build some powerhouse characters. Be warned though, you must unequip all trinkets before installing this mod.

7 Larger Inventory Stacks

As with any game with RPG elements, the limited inventory space can be a real pain, especially when dungeon diving. It’s additionally frustrating when your inventory is already full and one of your heroes dies, meaning you either have to drop loot to gather up their fallen trinkets or leave them behind.

Fortunately, the Larger Inventory Stacks mod increases all item stacks to 50 and increases the money stack to 100,000. As an additional bonus, the mod also makes the sell-back price of items the same as the purchase price.

6 Yennefer of Vengeberg

Adding new classes to the game with mods is a great way to add some replay value to Darkest Dungeon– plus, it’s even more fun when the class is a familiar character from another well-known gaming franchise. The Yennefer of Vengeberg mod adds the fan-favorite sorceress from The Witcher series.

The Yennefer class uses the Shieldbreaker class as its basis. This modder has managed to faithfully create the Darkest Dungeon style, while also recreating Yennefer perfectly. This is the perfect mod to play while you wait for the next season of Netflix’s The Witcher.

5 Roster Size Increase

With heroes who permanently die should they fall in battle, as well them needing to spend time in town to reduce their insanity, players are wise to keep their roster looking healthy with a decent mix of classes to ensure they have more characters on standby.

The most you can have in your roster on Darkest or Stygian difficulty modes is 28, while Radiant difficulty mode grants you 30 slots. The Shieldbreaker DLC adds an additional slot as well. However, the Roster Size Increase mod increases your roster size to 50 heroes in total.

4 Faster Combat

If you’re looking to expedite your dungeon crawling antics, then the Faster Combat mod will certainly speed things up a bit. This mod reduces the combat animations by half speed, though it leaves the critical hit animations unchanged.

This will considerably shorten the amount of time that players spend in battle, and will, therefore, make the overall adventure pass a lot quicker. This is a welcome change as the biggest criticism players normally have of dungeon crawlers is the repetitive time sink.

3 Faster Walking

Another way to speed up your Darkest Dungeon journey is to install the Faster Walking mod, which increases your normal forward walking speed from 400 to 600, and also increases your reverse walking speed from 200 to 400. You’ll be zooming through dungeons in no time.

This mod works with all difficulty modes, including the Bloodmoon mode. Additionally, this mod works in conjunction with the previous Faster Combat mod as both were made by the same creator and are made to be compatible with one another.

2 No Abomination Party Restrictions

The Abomination is a powerful party member, but there are characters who refuse to be in a party with him because of his demonic nature. This can be particularly frustrating if you’re trying to build a solid, strong party, as neither the Crusader, Leper, or Vestal will be in the same party as the Abomination.

Fortunately, the No Abomination Party Restrictions removes the coding that makes this restriction happen, ensuring you can mix and match characters to your heart’s content without worrying about any of them leaving.

1 Marvin Seo’s Lamia Class Mod

One of the best ways to add a new experience to Darkest Dungeon is to try out a brand new class. While Red Hook Studios hasn’t added a new class in a while, modder Marvin Seo has you covered with his Lamia Class Mod. In her human form, she cannot attack and is a healer; if she changes to her more beastly form, she can deal great damage, but her transformation also causes great stress to her own party.

Rather impressively, Marvin Seo has created all of the assets for this mod himself, including artwork and animations, where he has managed to perfectly match the Darkest Dungeon style. Seo has made many other additional classes, so be sure to check out the rest of his mod work.
