Rapidly approaching, a Pokémon meets your gaze. You toss a Poké Ball into battle, and the fastest strikes first. Having Pokémon with a high Speed stat could make the difference between winning and losing a fight. The fastest Pokémon strikes first, giving them the upper hand.
We’ve seen impeccably speedy Pokémon throughout the years. Several generations later, there are almost 900 Pokémon in existence! In the spirit of Pokémon Sword and Shield, we compiled this list, ranking the Pokémon with the highest Speed. This list was compiled using bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net’s base stats. Mega Evolutions are also excluded from this list, as they are hardly unique Pokemon (although many are quite fast).
Updated December 11th, 2020 by Tanner Kinney: Speed is a vital stat in the Pokemon series. When new, lightning-fast Pokemon are added, it’s often that they shake up the metagame by adding a new creature in higher levels of play. For some Pokemon, even speed isn’t enough to be viable. However, in the case of some of the new additions in The Crown Tundra, the second Sword and Shield DLC pack, they are poised and set to really shake up both the rankings here and in the competitive scene.
20 Spectrier
Spectrier is one of many legendary Pokemon added in The Crown Tundra. This phantom steed is said to represent many things, but its title of the Swift Horse Pokemon is one that it certainly earns. Spectrier alone clocks in at 130 base speed, galloping faster than any of its horse counterparts.
Spectrier is clearly designed with a glass cannon in mind. Its bulk is extremely poor, especially for higher tiers, but it can outspeed many of the common threats and has high enough special attack to make those hits matter. Between the two equine to select for Calyrex, Spectrier is the one to pick for those looking to go as fast as possible.
19 Eternatus
Another Galarian legendary, Eternatus is a being of pure Dynamax energy. It’s an otherworldly abomination, with strange powers that alter the genetic of Pokemon themselves. All of the Dynamax Dens across Galar have their connection to what originally was Eternatus during The Darkest Day.
Of course, Eternatus is also unusually fast for a beast of its size. It is tied in speed with Spectrier (and others) at a base 130 speed. Its statline offensively is actually similar to that of Spectrier, with more bulk fitting that of a legendary Pokemon. Most trainers likely used Eternatus to cheese Dynamax Raids in the post-game of Sword and Shield, but it’s clearly a threat in competitive battles as well.
18 Eiscue (Noice Face)
Eiscue is an interesting Pokemon. This single-stage evolution has an ability that gives it a free Substitute for physical-based attacks. Upon getting hit, it loses its slower, tankier form for a faster version of itself that can only kind of be considered “offense-oriented.” It lacks offense stats, but its speed spikes to levels above many other Pokemon.
This blockhead, upon losing its block head, gets a legendary-level base speed of 130. However, while this is funny and Noice Eiscue is pretty cute, the speed seems to be for running away as quickly as possible. It does have an okay physical attack stat, and has access to boosting that with Belly Drum. It’s a very situational Pokemon, but it’s at least funny.
17 Tapu Koko
A newcomer to the series, Tapu Koko was introduced in Generation VII, the generation with Pokémon Sun and Moon. Tapu Koko is surrounded by a patterned yellow egg that it uses for protection. Don’t be fooled by this Pokémon’s bulky and misshaped appearance; it is unbelievably fast.
Tapu Koko has a base Speed of 130, meaning that you won’t see one in the wild with a lower Speed than 130. It has the potential to reach 394 Speed when it reaches level 100. This makes Tapu Koko one of the fastest Pokémon in existence!
16 Crobat
Crobat is the final form of Zubat that evolves from a Golbat under the right circumstances. As a Poison/Flying-type Pokémon, Crobat is known to fly long distances by alternating between each wing. In the Pokémon anime, Brock eventually evolves his Zubat into a Crobat.
Crobat’s only stat that is exceptionally high is Speed. With a base Speed of 130, Crobat is a speedy Pokémon. According to Ash’s Pokédex, “Crobat, the evolved form of Golbat. With its two additional wings, Crobat can fly much faster than Golbat.”
15 Jolteon
Jolteon is the one and only Electric-type evolution of Eevee. You may realize by the end of this listicle that the fastest Pokémon are usually an Electric-type or Flying-type. Jolteon is a speedy Pokémon that resembles a cheetah. With a body made of lightning, it’s no wonder why Jolteon is so quick!
Its base stat in Speed is 130. Once Jolteon reaches level 100, it is capable of having a Speed stat of 394. Joleteon’s high Speed usually means that it attacks first in Pokémon battles, giving it the upper hand in a clash.
14 Aerodactyl
It’s an ancient Pokémon that was thought to be extinct, but its high Speed proves that Aerodactyl is more than alive. Aerodactyl is a Flying-type and Rock-type Pokémon. Despite being made of rock, Aerodactyl can reach high speeds, which it uses to its advantage in Pokémon battles.
Its base Speed stat is 130 and it’s capable of reaching 394 Speed once it reaches level 100. According to Aerodactyl’s Pokémon Ultra Moon Pokédex entry, “It flew through the open skies over the ancient continent as if they were its own. When it touched ground, its walk was weak and slow.”
13 Mewtwo
Portrayed as an evil Pokémon in Pokémon: The First Movie, there is more than meets the eye to Mewtwo. Born in a laboratory, Mewtwo is the product of science and the greed of its creators.
Mewtwo’s stats are exceptionally high, including its Speed stat. Despite being one of the fastest Pokémon in existence, Speed is not Mewtwo’s greatest stat. It has a base Speed of 130 and a Special Attack of 154. Given Mewtwo’s dominant nature, it is a good fit for any experienced trainer’s lineup.
12 Barraskewda
A pride of Water Pokémon everywhere, Barraskewda’s Pokédex entry says it can swim at a speed of “over 100 knots before ramming prey and spearing into them.” This is in line with its amazing base Speed stat of 136 that can be EV trained for a maximum of 408.
Besides being the fastest Water Pokémon, Barraskewda also has a good base Attack of 123 and is just over four feet tall (and apparently tasty to eat, according to the Pokédex).
11 Zamazenta (Hero Of Many Battles)
Pokémon Sword & Shield may be games filled with secrets, but it’s no secret that Zamazenta will give any opponent a run for their money on the battlefield. Zamazenta’s base stat in Crowned Shield form is a whopping 128, but that stat rises to 138 in its Hero Of Many Battles form. It also takes the crown for heaviest Fighting-type Pokémon, weighing in at 463 lbs.
At level 100, Zamazenta’s highest possible Speed stat is 390, meaning few will be able to keep up with this Warrior Pokémon.
10 Dragapult
Ah, the mysterious Dragon Pokémon. How can one creature be so strong and so fast at the same time? We may never know the exact answer, but we’re sure Dragapult is a part of it. With a base stat of 142, Dragapult’s Speed can reach up to 421 at level 100 and has the highest Speed stat of all Ghost Pokémon out there. Sadly, Dragapult is the only pseudo-legendary that can’t learn Earthquake, a beloved move by Pokémon trainers everywhere.
9 Zeraora
A newcomer to Pokémon, Zeraora is a pure Electric-type Pokémon. As a mythical Pokémon, Zeraora was introduced in Generation VII of the Pokémon games. It’s the final Pokémon listed in the Alolan Pokédex. This mythical Pokémon is like the equivalent of Mewtwo, aside from being exclusive to the Alolan region. Zeraora’s magnetic field emanates from its paw pads.
It’s a Pokémon with a base Speed of 143 that can ascend to 423 when it reaches level 100. According to Zeraora’s Pokémon Ultra Moon Pokédex description, “It approaches its enemies at the speed of lightning, then tears them limb from limb with its sharp claws.”
8 Accelgor
As a Pokémon that is neither Electric, Flying, or a legendary Pokémon, Accelgor is an outlier on this list. Accelgor is a Bug-type only, but pound-for-pound, it might be the fastest Pokémon of all time. Accelgor evolves from the Pokémon Shelmet after being traded for a Karrablast.
Accelgor has a base Speed of 145 and can reach a Speed of 427 when it hits its max level. According to Accelgor’s Pokédex entry from Pokémon X, “Having removed its heavy shell, it becomes very light and can fight with ninja-like movements.”
7 Zacian (Crowned Sword)
One of Generation VIII’s greatest Pokémon, Zacian received a lot more love than Zamazenta upon their original reveal, mostly due to its really cool sword. It also possesses a higher Speed stat than its counterpart: 138 in its Hero Of Many Battles form and 148 in its Crowned Sword form, which can reach a maximum of 438. This crowns it as the fastest Fairy-type and Steel-type.
The Galarian Pokédex describes Zacian’s Crowned Sword form as intensely powerful, only needing “a single strike to fell even Gigantamax Pokémon.”
6 Calyrex (Shadow Rider)
Spectrier is fast already. However, when it gains the power of a very regal Pokemon, it can go even faster than before. Don’t bother asking the logistics about how having more weight in the form of a rider makes the horse faster, just accept that it’s true. Unlike the slow, but bulky Ice Rider Calyrex, Shadow Rider Calyrex clocks in at 150 base speed.
With two abilities in one, Shadow Rider Calyrex breaks new ground of even previous fusion Pokemon, like Kyurem. Granted, Unnerve isn’t exactly the most dangerous ability, but having two can be a little absurd. Both of the Calyrex forms have their uses, but the absolute powerhouse that is Shadow Rider Calyrex is too good to pass up.
5 Electrode
In the first generation of the Pokémon games, Electrode was the fastest Pokémon. It evolves from a Voltorb at level 30, drastically increasing its Speed. Resembling a Poké Ball in the reverse, trainers mistake it for one and accidentally try to pick it up.
Electrode has a gigantic base Speed of 150 and can reach 416 once it hits level 100. As described by Electrode’s Pokédex entry from Pokémon Omega Ruby, “Electrode eats electricity in the atmosphere. On days when lightning strikes, you can see this Pokémon exploding all over the place from eating too much electricity.”
4 Pheromosa
As one of the Ultra Beasts, which was introduced in Generation VII (Pokémon Sun and Moon), Pheromosa is a genderless Pokémon that has no known evolutionary form. Although Pheromosa is capable of Flying, it is a dual Bug-type and Fighting-type Pokémon. It’s a Pokémon that made an appearance in the anime. Pheromosa attacks trainers with Z-Crystals and collects the crystals is steals.
Pheromosa’s base Speed is 151 and it can reach a Speed of 441 when it hits maximum level.
3 Ninjask
Based on its appearance, you may be surprised to learn that Ninjask is the fastest Pokémon on this list, though its name might give it away. With a base Speed of 160 and a whopping maximum speed of 460 at level 100, Ninjask is not to be underestimated. Speed alone makes it a fine fit for any Pokémon lineup.
According to Ninjas’s Pokémon Omega Ruby Pokédex Entry, “Ninjask moves around at such a high speed that it cannot be seen, even while its crying can be clearly heard. For that reason, this Pokémon was long believed to be invisible.”
2 Deoxys (Speed Forme)
A Pokémon can only be so fast before it becomes shocking, perhaps even alien, which is exactly what Deoxys is in Speed Forme. One of Hoenn’s many excellent legendaries, Deoxys in Speed Forme has an amazing base Speed of 180, which can reach a stunning maximum of 504 when it reaches level 100. This amazing skill is sadly unusable as of now in Generation VIII, with Deoxys being left out of the Galar National Pokédex.
1 Regieleki
The family of Regi Pokemon have a specific quirk. Many of them have a stat that clocks in at 200, but with other stats that are fairly mediocre. This (along with Regigigas’s Slow Start) makes the whole Regi family situational at best. However, at a glance, it seems like one of the two newest Regis will finally have a chance of being viable: Regieleki.
Regieleki breaks the record that Speed Form Deoxys has held for so long by coming in at 200 base speed, 20 faster than Deoxys. It’s an absurd number, and it even has decent offensive stats to make use of that ability to break the sound barrier. Yet, it still has pitiful bulk, so it’s still up in the air if Regieleki will find in place in high tiers of play, or if it’ll languish in NU like the rest of its siblings.
