With the end of the longest football season ever fast approaching, it’s almost time for the latest refresh to EA’s flagship franchise and a new batch of Ultimate Team Icons with FIFA 21.
FIFA 21 has already been confirmed as a cross-generation title, and while you can claim a next-gen upgrade for free, we know that the current-gen version will drop on October 6, 2020.
FIFA 21 New Icons
11 new legends grace the pitch in Ultimate Team for FIFA 21. While there are some classic names in there, this year’s crop leans heavily into noughties nostalgia and includes players that were still playing as recently as 2019.
- Eric Cantona – France
Another Icon best known for his time with Manchester United. His technical and mercurial style is sure to be replicated with high dribbling and shooting stats.
- Ashley Cole – England
An unquestionably quality defender and key member of Chelsea’s Champions League title-winning side, Ashley Cole veered
- Petr Cech – Czech Republic
The iconic helmet returns. Petr Cech was another rock when Chelsea won the Champions League, and holds the all-time appearance record for the Czech Republic national team.
- Samuel Eto’o – Cameroon
Ultimate Team needed more African legends, and few fit the bill as much as three-time Champions League winner Samuel Eto’o. He also holds the rare distinction of winning european club football’s biggest prize back-to-back with different teams – first with Barcelona in 2009 and then with Jose Mourinho’s Inter in 2010.
- Fernando Torres – Spain
Few players inspired as much affection from fans as Fernando Torres, and he won pretty much everything there was to win – including the World Cup and European Championship with Spain.
- Philipp Lahm – Germany
8-time Bundesliga champion Philipp Lahm was respected as one of the best full-backs in the world before he was reinvented as a defensive midfielder under Pep Guardiola. This could mean that there are some interesting position differences between his three Icon cards.
- Ferenc Puskas – Hungary
They don’t name the award for the most beautiful goal of the year after you for nothing. Puskas was one of the pioneering superstars of world football and the jewel in the crown of one of Hungarian football’s golden eras.
- Bastian Schweinsteiger – Germany
Like Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger was an integral part of perennial fussballmeisters FC Bayern for more than a decade. Known more for his technical ability than his pace, he played both on the right wing and deeper infield during his decorated career.
- Davor Suker – Croatia
FUT 21 adds another deadly striker to the mix in Davor Suker, who’s regarded as one of Croatia’s best ever players – and they’ve seen more than a few.
- Nemanja Vidic – Serbia
You can now recreate the iconic centre back pairing of Vidic and Ferdinand in Ultimate Team. Torres memes aside, Vidic was imperious in the Premier League with great defensive awareness, tackling, and tactical ability.
- Xavi – Spain
It’ll be interesting to see how FIFA 21 tries to recreate the skill set of Xavi Hernandez – who wasn’t the fastest, or the strongest, but is known as one of the most incisive passers of all time.
