Apex Legends is gearing up for its sixth season next week, titled Boosted. A new trailer was released yesterday highlighting gameplay fans can expect in the new season, but one particular moment in the trailer caught the ire of some fans, to the point where someone from developer Respawn actually had to respond.
The new season of Apex Legends looks to be bringing a lot to the game, including the new charming legend, Rampart, whose recent “Stories From the Outlands” trailer explained how she became involved in the Apex games. Rampart boasts an energy wall that acts as one-way bullet shield for her and her teammates, as well as an enormous turret gun she lovingly refers to as Sheila. The new gameplay trailer also introduced some other new things, such as the ability to craft weapons and items from a new kind of mid-match drop, and the new VOLT energy SMG.

One thing that won’t be changing apparently though is the Havoc, the energy assault rifle that has been around since near Apex Legend’s launch in February 2019. The Havoc is a weapon that takes time to ramp up to its full rate of fire but deals quite a bit of damage once it does. The only trade off to the Havoc’s power is that it has a bit of an erratic firing pattern. As most Apex fans know, pairing the Havoc with hip-firing is a recipe for not landing any hits. And as a recent post on the Apex Legends sub-Reddit points out, that doesn’t seem to be changing in season 6.
The post shows the Havoc rifle missing nearly a full magazine’s worth of bullets while the legend firing is zip-lining towards their target. The post clearly must have struck a chord with fans, as the post garnered nearly 3,000 upvotes, with many of the comments lamenting the Havoc’s poor accuracy when firing from the hip. This blew up enough that a developer from Respawn chimed in with an insight into the team’s design decisions.
The Respawn designer went into an explanation of how the team’s goal is to have a balance between mobility and accuracy. They say that Respawn wants long-range weapons like sniper rifles to be too hard to fire from the hip to promote being stationary and want close-range weapons like pistols and SMGs to be fairly accurate from the hip to promote movement when appropriate for those weapons. That leaves assault rifles like the Havoc in the middle, where the ability to hip-fire and still be accurate is a little more balanced down the middle. The designer states this is also done to make weapons all stand out from one another. Hopefully this answer from Respawn helps fans understand why the Havoc rifle is so weak when firing from the hip.
Apex Legends‘ sixth season, Boosted, launches on Monday at 10 pm PST or 1 am EST on Tuesday with lots of exciting new content like a litany of map changes coming to World’s Edge, including the sad departure of the Mirage Voyage.
Fans who need to finish their Season 5 quest of Battle Pass though should be sure to do that this weekend, and consider trying the new Limited Time Mode, Always Be Closing: Evolved, which is as stressful as it sounds.
Apex Legends is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Switch version also in development.
