Although most recent whispers have been about the ongoing legal feud with Apple, rumors of upcoming Fortnite cosmetics continue to circulate forums as well. Earlier today, a tweet claiming that developers were planning to include Wolverine as a skin began to make the rounds.
Twitter user @HYPEX, generally known for Fortnite news and leaks, states that a “very trusted source” says that Epic has, or had, plans for both a Wolverine skin and Wolverine Claws pickaxe, and that they may be Season 4 secret cosmetics, if not simply available for purchase from the Item Shop.
After recent updates introduced heroes like The Avengers and Aquaman, it would be no stretch at all to consider that a Wolverine skin is in the works. Earlier Fortnite updates also brought members of the X-Force, like Psylocke, into the ring, so it wouldn’t even be a stretch to say that other X-Men may join Wolverine in the future.
That’s if the above leak is legitimate – @HYPEX very transparently prefaces the post with “POSSIBLE Leak”, so fans should be cautiously optimistic. Even if the leak is true, game development plans often change. It’s best to await an official announcement before prepping celebrations.
Aside from the inclusion of other superheroes, Epic also introduced dual pickaxes last year. This is simply worth noting for the fact that it would make Wolverine Claws a particularly excellent choice of pickaxe skin for developers, as it would show off this relatively new feature. This was presumably the same kind of thinking behind the surprising addition of Hulk Smashers as a pickaxe. It also helps that Wolverine/the X-Men are Marvel characters, which have already been greenlit for crossovers.
If @HYPEX’s trusted source is correct, this would start to bring things back in the Marvel direction, seeing as the past couple of seasons have focused on DC Comics properties, like Harley Quinn, Batman, and Aquaman. Given the upcoming Joker and Poison Ivy Fortnite retail bundle, an extra few heroes to help even the odds would be more than welcome.
Speaking of retail bundle though, some fans may be understandably more concerned with the current legal disputes between Epic, Google, and Apple. If players are unable to make in-game purchases, some of these leaks may be a moot point altogether – after all, it’s difficult to buy a new Joker skin if there’s no way to pay Epic. Legal drama aside, it would be neat to see some actual X-Men join the Fortnite ranks.
