While many think of the Game Boy and Game Boy Color as the same console, they are actually entirely different consoles with their difference lying beyond the addition of color. The Game Boy Color does, in fact, add color, believe it or not, but there is also more processing power in the Color than the original Game Boy, allowing for more complex gameplay and more detailed graphics.
The Game Boy Color has a slew of games that are exclusive to the system and will not work on the original Game Boy. To look back at the system that is unfortunately consistently lumped with its predecessor, here are 10 of the best games on the Game Boy Color.
10 Warlocked
The real-time strategy genre is an uncommon sight on consoles but an even rarer sight on handhelds which truly makes Warlocked an interesting oddity. As with most real-time strategy games, in Warlocked you must gather resources and build up an army to then send after the enemy on a different part of the map. The strategy comes from knowing what to build and when to build it before attacking or being attacked. You can hook up Warlocked to additional Game Boy Colors for up to four-player action with the Game Boy Link Cable.
9 Pokémon: Trading Card Game
While many owned the Pokémon trading cards, not many knew how to actually battle with them as they were intended. Luckily, Pokémon: Trading Card Game shows you just how to use your pocket monsters and those energy cards everyone had way too many of.
The game is set up somewhat like the mainline Pokémon games with an overworld, gyms to battle in, and badges to earn. As you progress through the game you earn new cards that you can use to create the ultimate deck to take on the Elite Four with.
8 Metal Gear Solid
While the name would imply that Metal Gear Solid is a port of the PlayStation 1 title, it is actually its own unique game. It is structured similarly to the original Metal Gear games for the Nintendo Entertainment System and the Japanese exclusive MSX2 computer.
The game has a topdown view and you must sneak your way past guards in order to infiltrate certain areas. There are many tools you can use to make your way through the enemy stronghold such as cigarettes to distract guards with and a pistol with a silencer for when you get caught.
7 Pokémon Puzzle Challenge
Pokémon Puzzle Challenge takes the gameplay established in Tetris Attack for the Super Nintendo and brings it to the Pokémon universe. It works like reverse Tetris where all of the blocks are rising from the bottom of the screen. Rather than placing blocks, you rearrange them to line up with 3 or more of the same symbol. You can make combos and chains with quick strategic moves, something that will be required to beat the later levels of the game. There is a classic time attack mode as well as a story mode that has you going through gyms and earning badges before reaching the Elite Four.
6 Kirby Tilt ‘n’ Tumble
In Kirby Tilt ‘n’ Tumble you control Kirby by actually moving your Game Boy Color similar to Yoshi Topsy Turvy. This is done with the built-in accelerometers that react to you tilting the console itself. You guide Kirby through different levels by moving him along with the tilt of the Game Boy Color but you can also make him jump by giving the console a quick flick up. The jump attack can be used to collect higher up coins but is also used to take out all of the enemies on screen.
5 Wario Land 3
The Wario Land series actually started off as a sequel to the Super Mario Land series called Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3. In Wario Land 3 your main form of attack is Wario’s shoulder charge which can be used to take out enemies and breakthrough obstacles.
In Wario Land 3 you will encounter many different powerups that will both transform Wario and also give him a special ability. As an example, when Wario eats a donut he will grow double the size and has the ability to break through certain blocks.
4 Pokémon Pinball
Like other Pokémon games, in Pokémon Pinball your goal is to catch every single Pokémon. Being a pinball game, catching a Pokémon in Pokémon Pinball is done by sending the ball into a specific part of the board which will initiate the catch mode. This will cause a Pokémon to appear in the center of the board. After you hit the Pokémon enough with the ball, you will catch it. There are two different boards to choose from, the red board and the blue board, both with exclusive Pokémon that will only appear on one of the two boards.
3 The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons & Oracle of Ages
The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons & Oracle of Ages are the first two games in the series to be developed by Capcom, a tradition that would carry on for many future portable games in the series. In Oracle of Seasons, you are given the Rod of Seasons which Link can use to change between seasons, and in Oracle of Ages, you are given the Harp of Ages – both are used to solve many of the games’ puzzles. Once you have completed one game you are given a code to use in the other and after defeating both you will see the game’s true ending.
2 The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX
The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX is an updated version of Link’s Awakening. Added to DX was color and an additional hidden dungeon to play through. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX is a direct sequel to The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.
Link finds himself on an island after crashing his boat in a storm. He must awaken the Wind Fish that lives atop a mountain with 8 magical instruments that are scattered across the island. Link’s Awakening is one of the stranger titles in the series with appearances from Mario enemies and the entire game taking place within the Wind Fish’s dream.
1 Pokémon: Crystal
Pokémon: Crystal is an updated version of Pokémon: Gold & Silver. Added to Pokémon: Crystal is animations for the Pokémon during battle, the ability to play as a girl, and additional subplots including one involving the legendary Pokémon Suicune.
Pokémon: Crystal is part of the second generation of Pokémon games which added 100 new Pokémon, new types for Pokémon, new HMs, and more. After beating Pokémon: Crystal you can return to the region from the first Pokémon game and battle the main character of Pokémon: Red & Blue.
