The modding world of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is vast and variable, with tons of passionate and skilled modders teaming up to create unique and interesting ways to expand the already huge open world. Since 2016, Beyond Skyrim has been an ambitious modding project that aims to add new lands to Skyrim. Now, players can get their first look at the latest new region: Black Marsh.
Beyond Skyrim is a long-term multi-team effort to mod all of Tamriel into Skyrim. Teams of writers, animators, level designers, and artists have been steadily creating releases like The New North mod, which brings Morrowind’s icy northern islands into Skyrim. Since the Beyond Skyrim team is so big, it’s been split into multiple teams covering multiple projects at once so as to spread the hard work out over more people. And now one of these projects, Black Marsh, finally has an official first look video.
Black Marsh, also known as Argonia, is one of Tamriel’s nine provinces and a major focus for Beyond Skyrim that’s been in several years of pre-production. The official video shows some impressive shots of the dark, swampy region underscored by a narrator who gives some background both on the production history and on the Black Marsh province itself.
The Black Marsh mod focuses on multiple areas of the wetlands region, even including historical ancient ruins where players can scavenge for armor worn by the native Kothringi people, as well as other types being “concepted” by the team. Skyrim has some amazing weapons and armor mods, and given the high level of quality in other Beyond Skyrim projects, players can expect to have seriously good options. The mod also doesn’t skimp on the habitable regions of Black Marsh, as the video shows with several shots of the settlement Gideon.
The mod also focuses on the region’s fauna, and is “experimenting with custom rigs and animations.” The video also includes a call for applications from writers, artists, and designers interested in contributing. Predictably, the video’s comments are full of awe at the quality and appreciation for dedicated modders.
If it wasn’t already apparent enough that the modders are seriously passionate about the history and lore of The Elder Scrolls, the level of professionalism and production quality put into the video alone should give Skyrim fans a hint about how high-quality Black Marsh will be when it’s finished.
The visuals are top-notch, and the trailer’s music (which sounds like something players might hear in a AAA game) was composed by Hugh Turner and is available for free listening on his Soundcloud. Beyond Skyrim is known to put in a ton of research and details into its mods, and Black Marsh looks no different.
The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is available for PC, PS3, PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox 360.
