As one of 2020’s most anticipated titles, Cyberpunk 2077 continues to impress fans and seems set to be a massive release. The latest Night City Wire event showed off even more impressive gameplay with the three different lifepaths players can take and even how they influence the flow of the game. In addition to more scenes of Keanu Reeves’ Johnny Silverhand, players also saw more combat and the various weapons that are available to use. With all the first person shooting, CD Projekt RED is making sure players understand what Cyberpunk 2077 is.
In recent interview with Netrunner 2077, Senior Quest Designer Miles Tost reiterated that CD Projekt RED is doubling down on the role playing elements inside of Cyberpunk 2077 and taking it a step further than what players experienced in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. While fans may have seen a lot of shooting and guns, they shouldn’t expect this game to be just a simple shooter. It’s an RPG first and a shooter second.
Tost also admits he can understand why some fans assume Cyberpunk 2077 may not look like a deep RPG as players see a first person game with various guns and may automatically assume it’s a first person shooter. However, he promises that players will actually discover an incredibly deep RPG experience. Players will not only work with a highly detailed customization screen for their character, but will be making equipment choices, using skill trees and talents to further define their character, as well as dialogue choices which changes how the story unfolds.
In fact, dialogue is a big piece as to where those familiar immersive RPG elements start to appear such as dialogue options appearing if a certain skill level is high enough or the player possesses a certain trait. NPC characters will display noticeable body language towards the player, giving them a clue as to how to approach the situation with them. This includes slowly reaching for something behind their back, cars rolling up in the background and more. Should players catch these signs in time, they can choose to react to them such as cutting a conversation short or use the moment to turn the negotiation in their favor.
Considering that Cyberpunk 2077 is based on the original tabletop experience, the heavy reliance on RPG mechanics makes sense and should make longtime fans very happy. While the game may not have the original nine roles from the tabletop game, Cyberpunk 2077 will allow players to further expand upon the game’s take on the three core classes of Solo, Netrunner, and Techie. Couple that with the different life paths, skills, and perks available to pick from and players should have the freedom to play the way they want.
Cyberpunk 2077 launches November 19 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with PS5, Stadia, and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
