The PlayStation 5 is set for release in the holiday season this year with a bunch of new games to be excited about. While games like Horizon Forbidden West and Resident Evil Village aren’t expected until next year, there are a number of PS5 games set to release when the console launches, and now some of the new PS5 game covers that will hit shelves have been revealed.
So far, Sony has revealed what the new PS5 console and its DualSense controller will look like, but players are still waiting for a price point and official release date. Sony also shared what the typical PS5 game case and cover art will look like with an image of the highly anticipated new game Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Cover art for PS5’s Godfall has also been released, but many have questioned the simplicity of the new box design.
New PlayStation 5 game covers have been revealed by Australian retailer JB Hi-Fi, which has listed a range of PS5 games on its site for pre-order. PS5 covers for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Far Cry 6, Watch Dogs: Legion, Planet Coaster: Console Edition and Overcooked! All You Can Eat have been revealed. The cover art looks identical to the PS4 editions of the games but with the new white banner and PS5 logo. The website has the games listed at $99 and $79AUD but this is expected to be a placeholder until the studios release official price points.
Considering none of the featured games are PS5 exclusive titles, but are instead all getting PS5 upgrades or simultaneous releases, it makes sense that the cover art isn’t anything different to the current-gen box art that’s been already revealed. However, these titles do give a better idea of what PS5 games will look like in comparison to the PS4 cases. PS4 boxes make use of a blue banner and plastic case, but Sony is opting for a white banner with its next-generation releases, likely to match the white color of the PS5 console and DualSense controller.
Some fans had hoped that Sony would opt for more eco-friendly packaging, which is much more of a trend now than when the PS4 was first released. But it seems the plastic game case is here to stay for now. That being said, Sony is releasing a digital version of the PS5 console, meaning player’s can go completely disc-less if they choose. This would eliminate the need for game packaging all together as players can simply download their games digitally from the PlayStation store.
