More Xbox Free Games With Gold for August 2020 Are Available Now

The middle of the month has arrived, meaning the second wave of the August’s Games with Gold lineup is here. The two new games – Override: Mech City Brawl and Red Faction 2 – are now available to Xbox Live Gold members for free on the Microsoft Store.

Override: Mech City Brawl will be available to Xbox One players for free from August 16 to September 15. In the multiplayer 3D brawler game, which was released for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC in 2018, players pilot sky-scraper sized bots in arenas modeled after real-life cities. The game features 12 mech characters, each with unique abilities and play styles. Players can challenge their friends in local or online multiplayer, or go it alone in the game’s single-player campaign. Override: Mech City Brawl received mixed reviews upon release, but has developed a reputation as a fun party game.

Red Faction 2 is an Xbox classic that was released back in 2002. Thanks to backward compatibility, the game is available to Xbox One and Xbox 360 owners from August 16 to August 31. The first person shooter’s campaign takes place on Mars in the year 2080, and sees plays rising up against an oppressive regime to restore peace. The game’s 2009 sequel, Red Faction: Guerrilla, was remastered for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC in 2018. A new Red Faction game is rumored to be in the works.

Each month, Microsoft’s Games with Gold features four games – two Xbox One titles and two Xbox classics – for free download for Xbox Live Gold subscribers. August’s other two games included MX Unleashed, which was available from August 1 through August 15, and Portal Knights, which is still available until the end of the month.

Games with Gold may not be around for much longer, if current rumors are to be believed. Some Xbox insiders have suggested that Microsoft is considering phasing the program out to instead focus on Game Pass Ultimate. This makes sense, as Games with Gold rarely features the AAA titles that excite fans, but it’s still speculation.

One insider hinted that ending the program would also spell the end of Xbox Live Gold, which would remove the multiplayer subscription paywall and make online multiplayer free for Xbox gamers. It is important to note, however, that Microsoft has refuted these claims.

Other rumors suggest that Microsoft may be planning to merge Xbox Live with Game Pass for a service that would be similar to Microsoft’s current Game Pass Ultimate. Game Pass has been a major success for Microsoft and offers a better selection of titles than Games with Gold, so it seems likely that Microsoft would try to overhaul it as the next generation of consoles draws closer.
