Mount and Blade 2 Shows Off Official Mod Tools | Game Rant

After eight years in development, Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord launched into Early Access on Steam a few months ago, and it doesn’t look like it’ll be moving from that status any time soon. However, there is exciting news for players as Development Update #2 has been announced and will bring with it official modding tools.

Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord is highly rated on Steam, and offers a unique medieval gameplay experience for people who enjoy mixing strategy, action, and roleplay. It has the social engineering and variety of Crusader Kings 2, except that players actually get to ride horses and swing swords at their enemies. The original game had a huge launch in 2008, and the sequel is also popular among fans of the genre, so officially-sanctioned modding is exciting news for players.

Mods and hacks are no new thing in Bannerlord, which has proven itself as a game with the capacity for strangeness, like the official option to play as a baby. But with access to official mod tools, players will no doubt see an uptick in unique and helpful mods added to the game. TaleWorlds released a video on its official channel showing off its mod tools, and there are a lot. Players will be getting access to a lot of powerful options that could have a huge impact on the game.

The tools displayed in the video do look a lot like what the devs themselves would use to create the game’s extensive visual effects. The scene editor option gives players the ability to edit terrain with detailed painting tools, add in trees and rocks with ease, import and export meshes and textures, and manipulate objects. The global illumination tool lets players mess around with various realistic lighting situations. Players can also edit particles, cloth, and models extensively, even importing their own files.

TaleWorlds plans to also release documentation for these tools and work on expanding mod tools “all the time.” The tools really are extensive even where they’re at now, and are comparable to using a game engine without requiring coding skills. One of the biggest takeaways from this video is that players will be able to create their own locations and maps, enabling total conversion mods.

Besides the mod tools, this dev update will include combat improvements like spear bracing and an updated formation AI, meaning units will make better decisions when changing formations. The update is slated to release in late August, meaning players will have to wait a bit until they have access to these extensive modding tools.

Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord is available now on PC.
