From Detroit: Become Human to Destiny 2, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and this month’s release of Fall Guys, players have been given access to endless brilliant games on PlayStation Plus for over a decade now. Spanning across multiple eras from the PS3 to PS4, PS Vita, and even the occasional game on PSVR, the launch of the PlayStation 5 is a great opportunity for Sony to revamp PS Plus and prepare for the next generation of games and services if it wants to compete with Xbox Game Pass. In the meantime, another month has gone by and we have a brand new PlayStation Plus free games wish list for September 2020.
Last month, Ubisoft officially revealed the next big entry in its popular open-world first-person shooter series, Far Cry. Known for its iconic tropical Caribbean island settings and manic villains, Far Cry 6 takes players to the fictional island of Yara, which is inspired by Cuba, and aims to deliver “the largest Far Cry playground to date.” What’s even more exciting is that the game’s villain will be played by The Mandalorian and Breaking Bad star Giancarlo Esposito and is potentially teasing the rise of Far Cry 3‘s Vaas, although that remains speculation for now. However, Far Cry 6 won’t be released until February next year so now would be a great time for players to revisit the previous mainline entry, 2018’s Far Cry 5.
Taking a break from tropical island settings, Far Cry 5 takes place in the United States of America and follows a deputy sheriff that must work alongside resistance groups to take down Eden’s Gate, a doomsday cult led by Joseph Seed that has taken over the fictional region of Hope County. The game also received three fairly sizable DLC episode called Hours of Darkness, Lost on Mars, and Dead Living Zombies, taking players to the Vietnam War, to Mars, and to the set of a movie where players will take on hordes of zombies. There’s more than enough content in Far Cry 5 to keep players occupied before the holiday season officially begins.
Far Cry 5 is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
While Microsoft had to make the difficult decision to delay Halo Infinite to 2021, Sony is still positioned to bring the goods for the launch of the PlayStation 5 with Spider-Man: Miles Morales, a standalone sequel to Marvel’s Spider-Man. Released in 2018 as a PlayStation 4 exclusive, Marvel’s Spider-Man was quickly considered as not only the best Spider-Man game ever made but one of the best superhero games around. Players have been longing for great superhero games for a long time and outside of the beloved Batman Arkham series or NetherRealm’s Injustice 2, the PS4 and Xbox One generation has been pretty barren.
Developed by Insomniac Games, Marvel’s Spider-Man took the characters fans know and love and put its own spin on the world of Peter Parker; a bold move to make in the peak of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s popularity. Featuring an open-world version of Manhattan, multiple playable characters, boss fights against the likes of the Sinister Six and Kingpin, and a huge lineup of great and iconic suits including the original Sam Raimi suit from the first Spider-Man film, Marvel’s Spider-Man is one of the best games on the PS4 and would be a great addition to PlayStation Plus to build hype for the upcoming Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
Marvel’s Spider-Man is available now, exclusively for PlayStation 4.
In 2018, Brother: A Tale of Two Sons developer Hazelight Studios released its second game, an EA Original co-op game called A Way Out. Best described as Prison Break: The Game, A Way Out is a cooperative third-person action-adventure game about two convicted felons, Vincent and Leon, as they attempt to break out of prison and remain on the run from authorities. The game was designed entirely around co-op play and requires two players with absolutely no option for single-player.
Similar to the horror game The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan, the story takes place concurrently with one player controlling Leo and the other player controlling Vincent, meaning each player will come across their own unique scenarios, puzzles, and dialogue options. Playable either online or through local split-screen, players will need to work together in A Way Out in order to progress to the next stage.
A Way Out is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
Continuing the monthly trend of featuring a fun and unique PSVR game, Beat Saber is the cream of the crop on the platform and probably the best unofficial Star Wars game in recent years. Developed and published by Beat Games, Beat Saber is a VR rhythm-based game where players use red and blue sabers to destroy different colored blocks which represent musical notes. Designed for virtual reality, Beat Saber is an exhilarating and exhausting experience that perfectly captures what’s special about the technology, and also just so happens to give the player a decent workout at the same time. Sony previously released VR first-person shooter Firewall: Zero Hour as a bonus game on PS Plus, so hopefully, another PSVR game like Beat Saber gets released in the coming months.
Beat Saber is available now on PSVR and Oculus Rift.
Following the PS4 and PSVR centric “State of Play” live stream earlier in the month, a new report coming out of Bloomberg News claims that Sony will hold a second event in the coming weeks focused on its next-generation console, the PlayStation 5. There’s still a lot of big announcements that need to be including the PS5 release date, price, pre-order dates, and if there are any changes coming to subscription services like PlayStation Plus and PS Now. Based on the direction Microsoft is headed with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, it would great to see Sony combine PS Plus and PS Now into a one-stop-shop plan for everything PlayStation.
PlayStation Plus members receive two free games every month with their subscription.
