The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has led to the cancellation of many summer events. Summer Games Done Quick, the annual speedrunning charity effort, is one such event. But also like so many events, an alternative digital happening has taken its place. While it won’t be wholly the same, it’s still a great cause. Summer Games Done Quick fans can look forward to it starting tomorrow, Sunday the 16th, at 11:30 am ET.
Summer Games Done Quick Online will not be featuring a live component recorded from Minnesota like previous years. Instead, the Summer Games Done Quick team says it will be “broadcasting from our studio.” Individual speedruns will be shared from speedrunners‘ homes. The dates of August 16 through August 23 remains the same, as does charity beneficiary — Doctors Without Borders.
Games confirmed via Summer Games Done Quick’ Online’s schedule include Dark Souls to open the show and Pokemon Shield to end the show. Recent releases including Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Resident Evil 3 Remake, Half-Life: Alyx, and Final Fantasy 7 Remake will all be a part of the show. Also included are blocks of games for Mario and Castlevania, which fans often love to see. Over 100 different games will be played over the week.
Summer Games Done Quick Online has a lofty goal in front of it. Summer Games Done Quick 2019 raised an astonishing $3 million for Doctors Without Borders. It’s been on a trend of increasing the amount over the previous year that’s been consistent for 8 years in a row. No one knows whether being online will hinder Summer Games Done Quick or not, but it’s going to be a great event regardless. Tune in via the official GamesDoneQuick Twitch channel starting August 16 at 11:30 am ET.
