Considering the fact that Skyrim has been updated and released for a variety of consoles and platforms, some fans of the whole Elder Scrolls series may be starting to wonder if the older games will ever get some love. There is a joke about how Skyrim can be played on just about any electronic in existence, but the same can’t be said for any of the others.
The Elder Scrolls series launched all the way back in 1994 with Arena, releasing another title in 1996 with Daggerfall. Both of these action RPGs were DOS-based, and it wasn’t until the 3rd installment Morrowind, which was for PC and the original Xbox in 2002. that fans got a full-blown “modern” Elder Scrolls titles. While Morrowind has been ported to Xbox One and Oblivion to PlayStation 3, more modernized versions of the games have never been made.
And this is a real shame. There’s a reason why Oblivion retains a 10/10 on Steam in spite of its age, and why the Skyrim mods Skywind and Skyblivion are such popular ideas: fans all crave remakes of these games that they still love deeply.
For many gamers, Oblivion and Morrowind were the first involved, story-heavy, and long RPG-style games they ever played, and those characters, fights, and settings have stuck with them. All they need for many fans to rush out in droves to pre-orer are some updated graphics and maybe some new content, like some of the things that happened between Skyrim and Oblivion.
The proof is available all over the internet that it’s time for these games to be remade. People from all over Reddit have formed The Elder Scroll Renewal Project that connects volunteers together to work on mods that bring Morrowind and Oblivion back to life inside of Skyrim. Oblivion even got a playable fan remaster this year, completed almost entirely by a single modder, adding extra content and much better graphics.
With all the attention that these mods and updates have garnered, it seems like Bethesda must at least be considering remakes of these classic, fan-loved games in the Elder Scrolls series. But in a 2018 interview, Director Todd Howard stated that he didn’t want to see Morrowind remastered at all. “For something like Morrowind, my personal preference is not to remaster it,” he said, adding that the classic look is “part of its identity.”
In spite of the work that would have to go into the titles, many players are ready and willing to play new updated versions. It’s definitely time for upgrade to these two legends of the genre. However, it would take away some serious man-hours from work on the upcoming additions to the series, and fans may not be willing to wait for a new story in favor of getting remade, older stories. Elder Scrolls 6 could be the major shocking update to the series that would make fans forget all about Morrowind and Oblivion. But based on the community’s love for the older games, that’s highly doubtful.
The Elder Scrolls 6 is in development.
