Fans of WWE 2K Battlegrounds finally have the full roster of available fighters when the game launches on September 18, but that won’t even be all the available content. Players will be getting access to a ton of fighters post-launch in addition to the 70+ wrestlers available when the game releases.
The pro wrestling arcade action game promises a lot of over-the-top, intense fun for old fans of the franchise and newcomers alike. WWE 2K Battlegrounds comes with plenty of well-known wrestlers portrayed in a cartoony style as 2K Games fills the gap between 2K20 and 2K22. Although WWE 2K20 didn’t perform well, the style and gameplay shift in Battlegrounds may bring back some of 2K Games’ momentum. The devs have released an official list of all base game and post-launch playable wrestlers.
Players can play WWE 2K Battlegrounds‘ single-player story mode as a fictional wrestler fighting their way up to WrestleMania, or they can fight in multiplayer as the wide option of launch wrestlers available and after launch. Some obvious fan-favorites like The Rock, The Undertaker, and John Cena are releasing at launch, but fans will have to wait until post-launch for some amazing wrestlers, like Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat, Sting, and “Macho Man” Randy Savage.
Some fan speculations about the Battlegrounds roster proved to be correct when looking at the post-launch roster, which includes classic heel “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, edgy female wrestler Lita, the incredibly ripped Ultimate Warrior, powerful Goldberg, and demonic Kane. There’s clearly a wide variety of wrestlers available after launch, with newer fan-favorites alongside old classics and devilish heels listed by strapping faces. Players will really have their pick of what type of wrestler they want to play as, even if they have to wait for some of their favorites until a while after the game releases.
The post-launch list includes an obligatory asterisk that the wrestlers are subject to change, which is to be expected in any game, let alone a game using sometimes controversial real-life people as game characters. The post-launch list contains over 60 extra wrestlers, which is almost as much as are available at the start of the game, giving players the potential to practically double their roster.
WWE 2K Battlegrounds can certainly boast variety and has given players a huge incentive to invest in DLC, even if there are some fan concerns over Battlegrounds’ quality. No one wants to experience another huge disappointment like WWE 2K20, so hopefully, 2K Games put as much effort into quality as it did into variety.
WWE 2K Battlegrounds launches September 18 for PC, PS4, Stadia, Switch, and Xbox One.
