A fan has found a remarkable use for an old Nintendo 64, turning it into a Nintendo Switch dock. With this brilliant modification, the creator is able to slide the Switch directly into the toploading area of the Nintendo 64 console and play games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on an HDTV.
Reddit user u/slum_boy dubbed his creation the Nintendo Switchty-Four, and made the awesome Nintendo Switch mod using a Nintendo 64. Since then, their post showing off the piece of art has blown up. Fans are extremely interested in the design, with many wishing it were available for sale.
Not only does the Switchy-Four look very cool, but the functionality allows it to be used just like a standard Nintendo Switch dock, along with the ability to use GameCube controllers thanks to adapters and extenders being a part of the mod. While some companies are selling small Switch docks, this fan-made Nintendo Switchy-Four is quite larger than the standard dock, but it’s also arguably more interesting to look at. The normal dock isn’t bad looking, per se, but this Nintendo 64 dock is one that will cause double-takes from the Nintendo faithful.
Currently, the post has over 26,000 upvotes on the r/NintendoSwitch subreddit. One of the highest-rated posts of all time in the subreddit is another Switch dock creation, that one being an NES. The Nintendo 64 is extremely nostalgic for Nintendo fans, as is nearly the entire history of the company’s game consoles. There are countless examples of fans modifying or making creations of Nintendo consoles and games in unique artistic ways.
Some of the comments in the u/slum_dog post point out how the image is a Switch console using a Nintendo 64 dock with GameCube controllers for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, with some joking that the console is only missing Super Nintendo sound effects or the NES grey and black colors. The multiple generations of Nintendo hardware, software, and accessories all in one image is enough to make fans of the Big N a bit teary-eyed.
Nintendo’s hybrid console has been remarkably successful as of late, as the Switch was the highest-selling console for the month of July. Nintendo’s stock is up, it reported a massive increase in profits, and games like Animal Crossing have sold record numbers. As great as the Switch has performed, some fans would love to see some creative advancements, like new docks that are designed to look like classic Nintendo consoles, for example.
The Nintendo 64 was ahead of its time in many ways. Games like GoldenEye 007, Super Mario 64, and Ocarina of Time are often considered some of the best and most influential titles in gaming. While it is unlikely that an official Nintendo 64 dock appears any time soon, it’s undeniable that the love for the 90’s console is one that has passed the test of time.
