Following its second weekend of beta testing that not only let all PS4 players go hands on with Marvel’s Avengers, the Xbox One and PC crowds finally got access through pre-orders as well. Naturally, it didn’t take long for PC dataminers to dig through the game’s files and code. Numerous leaks have already occurred prior, but this latest one seems to have unleashed a new wave of previously unknown information about the game.
In a new post online, Marvel’s Avengers dataminers came across newly added listings for a number of playable characters previously unknown. The first of two dives initially uncovered the previously leaked Captain Marvel, She Hulk, Kate Bishop, War Machine, and Peter Parker, who has since been confirmed as being the PlayStation exclusive character. The discovery came after their calling cards were found in the game’s files, in-game battle passes that allow a character to grow and scale up as they’re played.
Following that logic, a second Marvel’s Avengers datamine delved further into the files and even more characters were discovered. The amended list includes Ant-Man, The Wasp, Vision, Black Panther, Dr. Strange, Falcon, Mar-Vall, Mockingbird, Quake, Winter Soldier, and Scarlet Witch. Interestingly enough, Ant-Man was actually listed as AntMan2 which could indicate that this is the Scott Lang version of the character as Hank Pym is likely a quest giver.
Curiously enough, even more characters were found in the files, though it’s looking more and more as if these ones won’t be playable. Dataminers discovered them outside of the core list of unlockable characters. The new list includes Frenzy, Ultron, Red Hulk, Deathlok, Vindicator, and Monica were found and likely mean that they’re NPCs or potential enemies that players will be able to fight. Still, it’s worth remembering that this content isn’t verified by Crystal Dynamics, so players should take this with a grain of salt for now.
At least a few of the potentially discovered characters have become known as Echo-style characters due to their similarity to existing characters. For example, Iron Man and War Machine, while visually different, are similar enough in terms of moveset that they could used in a way that Crystal Dynamics allows two players use Iron Man in an online mode. Previously, the studio confirmed that players wouldn’t be able to pick the same character when playing online, so a four person team wouldn’t be able to have four Hulks running around. Having Echo characters, similar to what Super Smash Bros does with its roster of characters, would be a way to work around this limitation.
Marvel’s Avengers releases September 4 on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X to follow.
