Nintendo Announces Another Indie Showcase Instead of A Direct

Nintendo was expected to host a big E3 Nintendo Direct presentation, as it does every year, but plans changed when E3 2020 was canceled. Nintendo still has yet to announce plans for a proper Nintendo Direct presentation since, instead focusing on third-party titles and indie games. And now Nintendo has announced yet another indie game showcase, with the announcement drawing ire from fans online.

Nintendo has announced that the next Indie World showcase will take place on Tuesday, August 18 at 9am PT. The presentation will be about 20 minutes long and focus on upcoming indie games that are in development for the Nintendo Switch. The announcement has not been well-received by fans, with Nintendo Direct now trending on Twitter as fans complain about the lack of information about a proper Direct presentation.

A Nintendo Direct for August 2020 has been rumored for some time, but Nintendo has kept quiet so far. Besides indie presentations and Mini Directs, Nintendo has been making individual game announcements, revealing Paper Mario: The Origami King a couple months ago and just recently announcing Pikmin 3 Deluxe for a late October release. It’s possible that this is the approach Nintendo will take moving forward, but it’s likely to upset fans who want the excitement of a proper Nintendo Direct presentation to look forward to.

Industry insiders have suggested that a Nintendo Direct is indeed in the plans for August 2020, but it remains to be seen what exactly Nintendo will announce at the show. As it stands, the Switch’s holiday lineup is pretty bare, with Pikmin 3 Deluxe being basically the only first-party release revealed for the holidays. It’s possible Nintendo has nothing to launch until 2021, but that seems unlikely.

One possibility is that Nintendo will use its next Nintendo Direct presentation to announce the rumored 3D Super Mario collection. With 2020 being the Super Mario franchise’s 35th anniversary, it was leaked some time ago that Nintendo plans on bringing Super Mario 64Super Mario SunshineSuper Mario Galaxy, and Super Mario Galaxy 2 to the Switch. The Wii U game Super Mario 3D World is also expected to make the jump, but outside of the collection. Whether or not that happens remains to be seen, but the information did come from reliable sources and proven industry insiders.

Another possibility is that the Nintendo Direct will be used to announce the recently leaked Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Switch port. Or maybe it will be used to announce something completely unexpected. Then again, it’s also possible that the Nintendo Direct won’t happen at all, and the only August presentation from Nintendo will be tomorrow’s Indie World showcase. Considering this, fans should keep their expectations in check.
