Avatar Fans Present List of Demand for Live Action Adaptation

Avatar: The Last Airbender and its sequel, The Legend of Korra, have historically had troubles with adaptation, with the most famous example, M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender remembered not only as a huge disappointment to fans of the series, but also a poor film in its own right. Hoping to prevent the most recent live-action Avatar effort from going off the rails,  fans have compiled a list of demands in the form of a Change.org petition.

The petition includes a couple of specific requests, including demands for culturally accurate casting, as well as having the characters be depicted as their actual age in the show. Much of the petition is dedicated to voicing concern over the departure of the original show’s creators, Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino, who indicated that the adaptation was not lining up with what they had envisioned for the project.

For those unfamiliar, Change.org is run by a for-profit organization, also known as Change.org. The premise is pretty simple: anyone who wishes to can create a petition regarding whatever issue they feel needs to be addressed. Then the petition can be distributed out and circulated to the internet, where it can be signed by anyone who agrees with it. However, while a petition can be addressed to specific individuals and companies, there’s no guarantee they’ll ever even see it, let alone pay attention to it.

It seems the departure of Konietzko and DiMartino, as well as the release of the The Legend of Korra on Netflix, has been a catalyst among the fanbase, triggering a significant outcry and inspiring this particular petition. As of writing, around 17k of the requested 25k signatures have been added to the petition. Clearly there is a not-insignificant portion of the potential audience that agrees with the message of the petition and is hoping for assurance that the project is being treated with respect and careful consideration of the source material. It is currently unclear whether anyone involved with the project has seen the petition, or if they will respond in any significant manner.

The Avatar: The Last Airbender live action series will launch on Netflix, though no release date has been announced.
