Each of the Call of Duty 2020 ciphers has a historical context. While some are variations on old U.S. codes, others are of a completely new design based on era technology. Despite this, each of the Call of Duty 2020 puzzles have one thing in common: they all lead players closer to the full trailer release of the next Call of Duty game.
Each of the Call of Duty VHS tapes has a color dot that matches one of the many ciphers discovered in hidden bunkers. As of the fifth day in this adventure, players are all met with a red dot matching the NIXSTACK puzzle. This puzzle is interesting as it takes advantage of Nixie Tubes and other old-style communication technology.
The first image in the NIXSTACK is mainly used to explain the function of a Nixie Tube. These small devices were layered wires that would heat up due to a specific compound. Depending on the layered section of the wire being heated, a different number could be displayed. From a top view, they would appear as a line, but each one is numbered zero through nine waiting for an input signal to light up specific sections. These wires could be adjusted to create a different pattern and therefore display different numbers in a more scrambled position. It is still unknown exactly how this puzzle connects to the Call of Duty VHS tapes.
Alignment is very important as misaligned Nixie Tubes would result in partially obscured symbols. The next image, NIXSTACk 2/3, shows another Nixie Tube missing several numbers. The key is to find the numbers that would fill the tube with the knowledge that it is zero through nine with no repeats allowed. Fans need to look at the shape of each number and find which number could transition easily, but this cipher might not be following that rule.
The mysterious Call of Duty Youtuber who solved many of these puzzles has filled out this section of the Nixie Tube puzzle. The final sequence he came to was “3894057261” but there are no notes explaining how he got there. There is still the unknown section at the bottom of the page which looks like a letter cipher similar to the other puzzles.
The final solution to this puzzle is still unknown. The text on the final NIXSTACK 3/3 reads “Broadcast signals need to be converted through certain nixie orders,” but what this means is still yet to be discovered. Fans are presented a pre-stack Nixie Tube, and from there, fans are supposed to bring down specific numbers. Hopefully, the next VHS tape will provide the final key to solving the NIXSTACK puzzle.
