Disney Will Release More Films on Premiere Access After Mulan

Following the recent news that Disney’s live action Mulan remake will be releasing through the Disney+ Premiere Access service, inquiring fans have unearthed unofficial confirmation that more of the company’s upcoming films will be coming out in the same manner.

Through various chats with Disney+ customer service, independent Marvel-focused news site Murphy’s Multiverse pieced together a few tidbits of info concerning Disney’s new experimental PVOD (Premium Video On Demand) platform. Among them was confirmation that Disney is planning to release more films through the service at some point after Mulan‘s premiere. While fans can currently only speculate on which movies will be included, Disney appears confident in the eventual lineup, with a help desk member saying “we guarantee you that Disney+ will offer more amazing movies.”

The news surrounding Mulan‘s unorthodox premiere stirred a bit of a controversy into the fan discussions. Chief among the concerns was the film’s $29.99 price tag on top of the regular Disney+ subscription fee. Many hold the opinion that the price is a bit too steep for just one movie, especially since they’re already paying for a service. But this new information has vaguely suggested that the Premiere Access fee, confirmed to be a one time charge, may cover more than one film in the future. However, this is merely speculation, as the same post on Murphy’s Multiverse later claims that “you’ll be paying an additional fee for each film ($29.99 does not get you access to all Premier Access films),” so it’s still a bit difficult to nail down the full details.

Some have been speculating that upcoming Disney films like Jungle Cruise (continuing the company’s penchant for basing movies off of famous Disney World and Disneyland rides) and Marvel’s highly anticipated Black Widow could be next in line after Mulan, and this new information makes those theories seem a bit more plausible. It would be very much in character for Disney to make every attempt at maximizing their profits, after all. With many theaters still closed, this could be quite lucrative from a business standpoint.

Mulan may not have been the ideal flagship film for Disney+ Premiere Access. Sure, it’s hotly anticipated and also a potentially important milestone for featuring an all-Asian cast, but it could be argued that something like Hamilton would have been a safer choice. After all, when it was added to the streaming service, it seemed to be dominating every conversation for at least a week. Publicity like that could have done wonders for Disney’s bold new initiative.

But what’s done is done, and Mulan is still a fine choice to christen the platform. Hopefully the confusion surrounding both the price tag and the film lineup will be cleared up in the coming weeks, but in the mean time, a little more speculation couldn’t hurt. How about a surprise sequel to The Emperor’s New Groove? That would be neat.
