Fall Guys: 10 Pro Tips To Avoid Elimination | Game Rant

It’s fun watching obstacle courses on television — be it heavy-duty challenges in American Ninja Warrior or the sheer fun in Wipeout and Takeshi’s Castle. However, players clamoring for a similar concept in video games won’t have to look any further. After all, Fall Guys puts players in the shoes of one of many contestants out for blood in this fun casual game. Of course, if by casual, gamers mean a battle to the finish line that involves pushing everyone else off the map.

As with other obstacle course concepts, Fall Guys takes players through a round of mini-games. Each of these mini-games has different objectives geared towards solo or team-based play. However, regardless of the mission, players only have one win condition: qualify for the next round. Unfortunately, this objective might become trickier than it sounds. Just how exactly do players avoid elimination?

10 Understand Core Mechanics

It’s important to remember that, at its core, Fall Guys has three sets of major actions: Jumping, Diving, and Grabbing. On the PlayStation 4, basic actions include moving with the left analog stick and adjusting the camera with the right stick. Players can see players names with L2, and use emotes via the D-Pad. As for the major controls, players press X to Jump, square to Dive in mid-air, and R2 to Grab.

Before players try to “go pro” in Fall Guys on the get-go, they should familiarize themselves first with how these controls feel. Unlike other games, the small nature of Fall Guys‘ characters makes them extremely tricky to handle.

9 Physics Matter

The inherent tiny nature of Fall Guys and its jelly-bean like avatars make them susceptible to fall over and trip. However, Fall Guys isn’t one of those “inherently-difficult” games. Rather, the “wonky” controls of the jelly avatars also affect the way they interact with the rest of the mini-games’ areas. As such, tiny shifts in their position may put a player at an immense advantage of eliminating them.

For instance, using Grab at the right time can help players avoid falling off ledges or even steal items from enemies. Meanwhile, the right use of Dive can either give the player a split-second advantage or lose that split-second needed to secure their place as a qualifier.

8 Careful With Jumps

Like other platformers, jumping becomes a central mechanic in Fall Guys. Players need to time their jumps properly to dodge moving objects, avoid ledges, and even jump towards the finish line. Unfortunately, unlike other platformers, player avatars have large bodies and stubby legs, meaning they can’t carry their weight properly.

As such, players need to be extra mindful of how they time their jumps. Players of Fall Guys need to remember that if a platform seems “far enough” but they “might” make it, chances are they won’t. As such, players need to mind their momentum and placement before doing their jumps. Sometimes jumping as a platform falls or as some ledges arrive or pass might make a huge difference.

7 Dive For That Hard Fall

A lot of players might soon realize that pressing Dive after a Jump launches their avatars down on the ground. Some players might wonder why even Dive when they can just free fall from a Jump. Thing is, landing from a high area after a Jump can cause the player to have a bit of lag time after meeting the ground. However, Diving from a high place can help the player get back up faster.

For instance, players can use Dive to gain distance away from multiple enemies, especially when they’re getting pushed around. Meanwhile, Dives also help players get ahead from the competition or even knock around giant footballs.

6 Grab Strategically

Thanks to the game’s more Grab-centric levels, players might think they should only Grab in these specific mini-games. However, Grabs remain a central mechanic in Fall Guys, as Grabbing can determine the difference between qualifying or losing the next round. Outside Grab-centric levels like Egg Scramble, Royal Fumble, and Tail Tag, players should pull themselves back up after Grabbing platforms and even pull opponents down.

In addition, players can use Grab to secure their positions on ledges in Slime Climb. Moreover, this remains crucial in games such as Team Tail Tag. Players with tails who jump too often can get the attention of enemy players. Instead of Jumping frequently, they should instead try to blend in with the crowd or hide their tail using corners.

5 Beams For Beans

As with most obstacle courses, the beam remains a staple obstruction designed to push contestants away from the main goal. While this contraption remains funny to watch in most TV game shows, it’s annoying to deal with in Fall Guys. Interestingly, players can approach beams strategically and use it to their advantage.

Sometimes, jumping over beams can just trip their avatar and lose the round. One safer approach would be approaching the beam towards the center and then jumping shorter lengths to pass the entire rotating set. Likewise, more pro players can time their jump towards the edge of the beam to propel themselves forward.

4 Fast Is Not Always Good

Players who want to “go pro” will likely rely on finding shortcuts to traverse the mini-games the fastest. Aside from finding the fastest way to pass obstacles, others might start relying too much on speed panels to zigzag across the area much faster. However, as levels like Dizzy Heights may demonstrate, these panels can sometimes lead to disastrous consequences.

In the final area of Dizzy Heights, the game offers three routes. The aforementioned speed panels are in the center route, which is what most players might take. It’s that fastest, after all. Unfortunately, this route also leads towards the blades of a spinning fan too quickly. As such, instead of relying on uncontrollable speed, players can take the other two routes (left and right) to work their way slowly but surely into victory.

3 Assess Distance At All Times

A lot of mini-games in Fall Guys either clump players together, assign them into teams, or give massive areas for players to disperse. When playing the game, players need to assess which positions remain crucial at all times. For instance, team-based games make it ideal for players to work together in order to qualify for the next round the fastest.

However, more intricate mini-games need spatial analysis. For instance, players should become wary of jumping-based mini-games as getting too close to enemies leaves them prone to getting grabbed. Meanwhile, staying too close to a mob might slow a player’s progress and lead them to defeat.

2 Rely On Clutch

Thanks to the rather clumsy nature of the jelly bean avatars, Fall Guys relies on players to study their timing and positioning as well. Ideally, players should Dive not just to get into better position, but to push someone or something away. Moreover, the right Dive can halt the player’s advance elsewhere, allowing them to stand up if they’re continuously sliding, for example.

Moreover, players should trust their instincts more while in the game. For instance, checkpoints a ledge away from a player can be hard to Jump onto. However, that’s because some of these ledges don’t need players to land on them – but rather, these ledges need players to Grab onto them. That’s right – Grabbing the edge of a goal counts!

1 Lose With Purpose

A lot of players will experience a ton of defeat in their first few rounds of Fall Guys – be it falling off ledges, falling too short of an objective, or just not knowing what to do. In these situations, it seems players really “git gud” when they experience a ton of defeat. However, players who want to go pro should remember that, while defeat sometimes is inevitable, it can become strategic.

As such, players who know they’re still improving in Fall Guys should at least get defeated with purpose. For instance, players can “throw away” matches in exchange of trying new strategies or tactics against others. Perhaps a Grab would work in a certain situation, or maybe a Jump works much better than a Dive in this challenge.
