Fans of Ghost of Tsushima will soon have new ways to enjoy the game, as Sucker Punch has just announced Ghost of Tsushima: Legends. This free content update promises to provide players an online multiplayer experience focused entirely around cooperative play and claims that players will need to synergize their abilities in order to come out on top. One of the four classes available to players at launch is the Ronin class, a group that fans of the game are no doubt familiar with thanks to their prevalence in the story. A deep dive into the trailer and analysis of the Ronin in the base game provides some insight on how this class might work.
It has been said before and will be said again, but no one knows exactly how these classes will work outside of Sucker Punch itself. Between the Samurai, Ronin, Hunter, and Assassin classes, each will be unique and will probably introduce interesting new mechanics of their own. These are just predictions based on what was shown in the announcement trailer and some of the existing content in Ghost of Tsushima, and should be taken as mere speculation until Sucker Punch comes out with an official announcement or reveal of each class’ abilities.
As with the Ghost of Tsushima Samurai class prediction, the best place to start when guessing at what the Ronin might be capable of is Jin’s technique tree. Although exploration probably won’t come into play too much, the Ronin does have a stake in one of the Mythic Techniques. The Dance of Wrath was famously created and used by the Spirit of Yarikawa’s Vengeance. Though this individual wasn’t really a Ronin, the samurai of Yarikawa are reminiscent of that group in the way they are seen by the other Samurai. His armor also seems similar to the Kensei armor available to Jin after defeating Kojiro, one of the most powerful Ronin.
Beyond this, it is likely that the Ronin will focus more on the Evasion skill tree than the Deflection one, gaining abilities like the Shoulder Charge, Sprint Strike, and Perfect Dodge. Regarding stances, it would make sense for the Ronin to have all of the main four, though it is possible that there will be completely different stances for this game mode. The big thing that could set the Ronin apart from the Samurai is the use of certain Ghost techniques. Though most of these will likely be reserved for the Assassin class, the Ronin could gain access to some of these or use techniques that the Ronin use against Jin during duels in the base game.
Looking closely at the trailer reveals a few things about the Ronin, including certain abilities he probably will have and some he may not. Though in most cases, it seems like the Ronin is lacking a bow, there is one brief scene in the trailer where he is shown with a half bow on his back. Odds are the Ronin won’t gain access to the longbow or too many techniques that boost archery, as those will be reserved for the Hunter.
The Ronin is shown to be one of the three classes capable of using Ghost of Tsushima‘s grappling hook as well. This doesn’t mean that the Samurai won’t have a grappling hook, but the Ronin’s use of it is called out specifically in the trailer. Finally, the Ronin does use some kind of supernatural technique where he floats into the air and is surrounded by a white light. A symbol appears above his head and he slams to the ground, presumably damaging enemies around him. Hopefully more is revealed about the Ronin class soon, but this symbol’s meaning could give more information about the technique.
