Harley Quinn Writer Wants a Third Season, Hopes HBO Max Does Too

Harley Quinn was a surprise hit when it premiered on DC Universe in late 2019, so ever since the second season reached its satisfying finale in June 2020, fans have been eagerly awaiting news of a third. However, due to the show’s new home HBO Max having yet to order a new season, it seems that series writer Dean Lorey is playing the same waiting game as the fans, but he’s already prepared for when that day comes.

In a Twitter exchange with Steven DeKnight, creator of Spartacus on Starz, Lorey answered DeKnight’s enthusiastic praise for Harley Quinn with his own excitement about working on the show and his hopes for its future. “We’d love to make one!” he said, in response to DeKnight’s query about the possibility of a third season, “we’re still waiting to hear something from HBOmax. It was so much fun to work on (Bane!) and we have a lot more story to tell.” His specification of Bane likely refers to their well-received take on the character, basing much of the humor around a deliberately goofy impression of Tom Hardy’s infamous “Bane voice” as heard in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises.

Harley Quinn, starring Kaley Cuoco as the voice of the titular villain, took audiences off guard with its R-rated, comedy-focused take on the character and the world she inhabits. The snappy writing, over the top violence, and surprisingly heartfelt character interactions quickly attracted fans, which was no small feat given the relatively limited audiences of the DC Universe streaming service.

However, in August 2020, the show migrated to HBO Max along with the rest of the DC Universe’s original programming, which gave it the opportunity for more widespread exposure to viewers. As a result, it seems that the potential for new seasons may rely on how well Harley Quinn performs at its new home. Dean Lorey appears fully on board to keep the series running, with his co-developers Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker both previously expressing interest in a third season. They have even confirmed that further episodes would feature Harley and Poison Ivy as an official couple. After the season 2 finale finally provided a payoff for all the growing romantic tension between the two partners in crime, many fans would understandably see this as a major incentive to keep watching.

There aren’t many shows like Harley Quinn. At least, there aren’t many that go as far as it does. On the surface, it’s a well-written and well-executed comedy superhero show with a pleasing art style. Then you see Harley and Ivy having a heart to heart while dissolving a bunch of corrupt executives in acid. The way it blends comedy, heart, and a healthy dose of super violence without allowing any of those elements to fade into the background is as impressive as the audacity with which it gives established characters fresh new interpretations that always work.

A third season of Harley Quinn would be well-deserved, for both the fans and the creators. Along with other high-quality new hits like Doom Patrol and Stargirl, it could really help pave the way for DC to take on a whole new life on the small screen, despite its seemingly ill-fated streaming service. So please make more of it, and make at least one episode that’s just a happy date between Harley and Ivy, because gosh darn it they’ve earned that much.

Seasons 1 and 2 of Harley Quinn are currently available for streaming on HBO Max.
