Hitman Multiplayer Servers Shutting Down | Game Rant

Hitman 3 is bringing some new challenges and content for World of Assassination fans to enjoy, but it’s also nixing some old features that may come as a disappointment to some users of the classic stealth video game. IO Interactive is focusing its resources on single-player content, as Hitman 3 won’t have co-op or multiplayer elements, and Hitman 2 players will be losing access to these servers soon.

The Hitman games have been a big “hit” in the stealth games genre, although some people criticize the first two games in the World of Assassination trilogy for being too repetitive. The new Hitman 3 game modes are IOI’s answer to this criticism, and only time will tell if players judge them to be a good answer or not. Sniper Assassin mode is returning to Hitman 3, but single-player only, and the mode’s servers in Hitman 2 will be retired before the new game’s launch. Ghost Mode, the 1v1 competitive multiplayer, is leaving completely, and won’t return to Hitman 3.

Multiplayer in the Hitman games was an exciting challenge for some players and an alternative to progressing Agent 47’s story, and there are fans who will be sad to see it go. IOI says it has a plan to provide a “solution” to multiplayer trophies for those who’ve put in time and hard work into earning them. Players can also expect to see more information later on in the year about when exactly Sniper Assassin’s co-op servers will shut down.

The Ghost Mode servers, on the other hand, have a set retirement date: August 31. IOI acknowledged how “difficult” the decision was to stop supporting a unique game mode that Hitman fans can’t get elsewhere. Some fans may miss the classy Phantom Suit, which was only obtainable in Ghost Mode, but IOI has confirmed that this iconic item will be unlockable in Hitman 3.

IOI adds that it has learned a lot from creating and supporting Ghost Mode over the past two years, and that it isn’t averse to returning to multiplayer experiences in the future. Hitman 3 will be getting VR gameplay, and the devs are no doubt focusing a lot on making virtual reality a seamless experience for Hitman fans, which will have taken resources from multiplayer support.

Hitman 3 is rumored to be the most challenging and engaging game in the Hitman series, and fans can hope that it’ll be a worthwhile conclusion to the World of Assassination trilogy. Many players will be sad to see the multiplayer servers come to an end, and will have to look to other co-op game modes to get their fix.

Hitman 3 is releasing in January 2021 for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
