Luz Noceda, the lead character of The Owl House on the Disney Channel, has been officially confirmed to be bisexual by the series’s creator, following the events of its last two episodes. This marks the first time that a Disney show has featured a bisexual character as its lead.
This was revealed during the August 8th episode of The Owl House, “Enchanting Grom Fright,” where the audience (but not Luz) discovered that Luz’s friend Amity has feelings for her. This came after Luz had to dance-battle a shapeshifting demon at the girls’ witch school prom. As one does.
The Owl House‘s creator and executive producer, Dana Terrace, took to Twitter after “Enchanting Grom Fright” aired to confirm fans’ theories. “…I was very open about my intention to put queer kids in the main cast. I’m a horrible liar, so sneaking it in would have been hard,” Terrace wrote. “When we were greenlit, I was told by certain Disney leadership that I could not represent any form of bi or gay relationship on the Channel. I’m bi! I want to write a bi character, dammit! Luckily my stubbornness paid off and now I am very supported by current Disney leadership.”
At time of writing, Luz and Amity’s relationship is mostly a will-they-or-won’t-they with Luz being mostly oblivious to Amity’s feelings. Terrace has promised to continue to explore the characters’ relationship as the show continues. Fortunately, she has another season in which to do it, as The Owl House was preemptively renewed for a second season in November of 2019, about six weeks before its series premiere.
The Owl House premiered on the Disney Channel in January with a 20-episode season. It follows 14-year-old Luz Noceda (Sarah-Nicole Robles), who’s on her way to a summer camp for disruptive children when she stumbles into a portal to a magical dimension called the Boiling Isles. There, Luz opts to attend witch school and learn magic. In addition to Robles, the show stars Wendie Malick and Alex Hirsch, with guest voice roles from Isabella Rossellini (!), Eden Riegel, Arin Hanson, and more. The recurring role of Amity is played by Mae Whitman.
Luz’s debut as the first bisexual lead on a Disney Channel show follows Andi Mack’s Cyrus Goodman, who came out as gay in a well-regarded storyline in the show’s second-season premiere. While gay characters weren’t and aren’t an uncommon sight in various shows’ supporting casts up to that point, including Good Luck Charlie, Gravity Falls, and Star Vs. The Forces of Evil, Cyrus and now Luz are the first LGBTQ protagonists for the Disney Channel.
The second-to-last episode of The Owl House‘s first season, “Agony of a Witch,” premieres on the Disney Channel on August 22nd.
