Video Criticizing ‘Tryhard’ Gamers Goes Viral, Ninja Responds

Unless it is able to sell off its US operations to a US company, TikTok is on the verge of being banned in the United States. Before then, though, the app is filled with all sorts of content, including plenty of videos about video games. One recent video game TikTok video has gone viral for its criticism of “tryhard” players in online multiplayer games.

The video, uploaded by user Mubeen Momodu, is a reaction to a clip of someone playing the new Fall Guys battle royale game. In the video, Momodu explains how “tryhard” gamers ruin the online multiplayer experience for others. “This is the reason why I stopped playing video games,” he said. “You lose the fun in a game when you turn everything so, so competitive.” Later in the video, Momodu refers to the Fall Guys player, who appears to simply be jumping from one shape to the next to survive in one of the mini-games, as a “sweat.”

Finally, the video concludes with Mubeen Momodu blaming tryhard gamers for ruining games like Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone, saying that tryhards are the reason why people don’t play Fortnite anymore (this statement is demonstrably untrue, however, as Fortnite remains one of the most popular and most-played video games in the world).

The TikTok video has gone viral and garnered quite a few responses. While there are some that seem to agree with Momodu’s assessment, others have criticized the video by pointing out that the point of competitive online multiplayer games is to win. If one isn’t trying to win, then there wouldn’t be a point in playing. The video even garnered a response from a variety of professional streamers and gamers, like Ninja, who poked fun at both it and himself. In his tweet, Ninja repeated his controversial “it’s just a game” quote that made headlines earlier this year.

The concept of “tryhards” and “sweaty” gamers seems to have been exacerbated lately by some design choices in competitive online multiplayer games. Most of the top online multiplayer games nowadays use skill-based matchmaking, which is designed to ensure that players are constantly playing with those of a similar skill level. The result is that players rarely find themselves in lobbies with those who are far less-skilled and experienced than themselves, and so online multiplayer games are arguably more intense and competitive on a consistent basis than they were in the past.

Despite SBMM being controversial in Call of Duty and pretty much every other game it’s been implemented, developers and publishers seem to think that its pros outweigh the cons. But even when SBMM wasn’t as commonplace, “tryhards” and “sweats” were always in online multiplayer games, and it’s unrealistic to expect to play an online multiplayer game against people who aren’t actively trying their best to win.
