Videogames and TV series are two totally different mediums of entertainment. Their disciplines in storytelling also have varied approaches from each other. While TV is an audiovisual medium, videogames have the added layer of gameplay, making them a much more complex storytelling platform.
However, some TV series like the popular anime Naruto made for some exciting games with fun gameplay mechanics to boot. There are also a bunch of other shows that may not have their own games yet, but totally deserve one. The same goes vice versa. With that being said, here are five shows that would make amazing games, and five games that would make amazing shows.
10 Overwatch (Game To Show)
Overwatch produces some of the most beautifully animated cinematics in the gaming industry. Blizzard shorts such as Dragons and Honor and Glory prove the company’s capability to produce wondrous animated stories. On top of the rich lore Overwatch has, along with some characters not having any deeper story, Blizzard could very well produce an Overwatch TV series. This could be executed well considering the vast representation the roster brings. Not to mention their bright contrasting characteristics that could turn episodes into masterpieces with their chemistry. An Overwatch series would be a great idea for a show as it could also cater to non-gamers.
9 Agents Of Shield (Show To Game)
Gamers are more hyped with the big Marvel superheroes like The Avengers. However, there is some interesting stuff going on with the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division as well. Players taking control of less significant non-Avengers will better immerse players into the Marvel universe than playing as an Avenger will. An Agents Of Shield game may involve exhilarating chases with mutants, doing spreadsheets for super suits, and all the other logistics of saving the world. It will give players the satisfaction of an unsung hero in a world of galactic conflict.
8 Yakuza (Game To Show)
The Yakuza games center around the notorious Japanese mafia. Apart from the gritty seriousness of a typical crime game, Yakuza also has its wacky in-game moments in the form of side quests and other events. Considering the huge influence Japan has on international pop culture and entertainment, it would be great to see a series on Yakuza.
A Japanese crime gang who will terrorize rival gangs, but can also blast out an emotional karaoke number at the bar, or deliver pizzas will make for great TV entertainment. Crime dramas are a staple in the TV industry. Bring Yakuza’s spin on the genre with its wacky absurdity, then you get the ultimate Japanese crime drama.
7 Umbrella Academy (Show To Game)
Much like The Incredibles, Netflix’s Umbrella Academy centers around a foster family imbued with special abilities. The saving the world narrative is spiced up with the group’s dysfunctional chemistry with each other. The Umbrella Academy would make a wonderful action-adventure game given its rich narrative and great-for-gameplay combat. The powers featured in Umbrella Academy such as time-space manipulation and metal bending will be very satisfying to use in a video game. The banter between the family will also enrich the experience for players.
6 Red Dead Redemption (Game To Show)
There are many ways to go about a show for Red Dead Redemption. One, a show about the Van Der Linde gang; or two, centering around the growth of Jack Marston. No Red Dead Redemption game hasn’t ever won a Game Of The Year award. That just shows how masterfully crafted every RDR game is. Though a Wild Western isn’t a totally new genre in film, it will saturate the TV industry dominated by comedies and dramas. Following Dutch’s outlaw gang, a bunch that has yet more stories to tell, this will make it one unique life-of-crime series centered on family values and togetherness, and also make for some dramatic internal and external conflicts.
5 Peaky Blinders (Show To Game)
Peaky Blinders is a crime drama set in 1919 Birmingham, England. Tommy Shelby, leader of the notorious Peaky Blinders, facilitates illicit activities across Birmingham. The show has its share of good ole fashioned scraps and brawls, all set in an industrially flourishing era. If Red Dead Redemption spans from 1899-1911 America, a Peaky Blinders game would be the best UK counterpart.
RELATED: 10 Worst Licensed Video Games Based On Movies (According To Metacritic)
Though a puzzle-adventure Peaky Blinders game already exists for the PS4, an open-world game will better suit the franchise. A game that will capture the show’s brutal crime motifs would make for a great gameplay experience combat-wise, along with a delightful criminal narrative. All this in a fictional UK setting would rival well with GTA and RDR.
4 Assassin’s Creed (Game To Show)
The timeline Assassin’s Creed operates on spans across a couple thousand years. From Greece’s golden age to the Vietnam War, Assassin’s Creed has a great narrative for each era. Even World War 1. Though Assassin’s Creed had a movie in 2016, it would be something else to follow these assassins through a TV series, showing their lives outside of the game. The show would have to invest heavily on a research team though to fully pull the viewers to the same historical accuracy the games bring. It would also be a great addition to the franchise if the show featured eras not shown in the games. An Assassin’s Creed TV series would not only show the wonders and innovations of different eras, but would also create interesting narratives fitting for the respective eras. It would be like a “what-if-this-happened?” historical series.
3 Rick And Morty (Show To Game)
Traveling across time-space and dimensions, Rick and Morty is one of the craziest science fiction shows of all time. The show is existentially woke, and critical of all the norms of human society. Walking through different dimensions, Rick and Morty battle weird oddities and literally even themselves. Some would say that the show is aware of its own existence. Though a Rick and Morty VR game already exists, an 18-rated colorful adventure Rick and Morty franchise like Legend Of Zelda or Kingdom Hearts would also be a success. However, with much more adult content and cursing. The possibilities are endless with the infinite dimensions these guys travel.
2 Cuphead (Game To Show)
Besides being the most agonizingly difficult 2D platformer shooter of all time, Cuphead has an amazingly bizarre concept for a cartoon. This, paired with a unique hand-drawn art style. Just like the show Adventure Time, the characters of Cuphead are full of life and color but complemented by an old-timey 50’s aesthetic, along with a brilliant soundtrack that seems to play from a gramophone.
An adventurous cartoon series that follows Cuphead and Mugman’s troublemaking shenanigans, along with the crazy world of the Inkwell Isles, will make for a timeless series that will rival that of Finn and Jake’s. Here’s hoping that Cartoon Network (or Adult Swim) greenlights it.
1 Avatar The Last Airbender (Show To Game)
Avatar The Last Airbender is one of the best shows of all time. The show features the ability to bend either one of the four elements– water, earth, fire, and air. The Avatar is able to bend all four with the goal of bringing peace and balance to the world. It’s also a kids’ show that tackles deeper political and societal issues, and does so in a light that makes it comprehensible and child-friendly.
One man called Elca Gaming is making an entire Avatar game through the PlayStation creation system, Dreams. So far, the Aang Project, as he calls it, is doing well. Avatar would make a great open-world RPG if Ubisoft, EA, or any game developing giant acquires the proper rights and steps in to help develop the game. The unique fighting system that the show has will translate properly into gameplay, along with the show’s timeless narrative. Also, the vast beautiful world of Avatar is something a lot of fans wish they could step foot in.
