The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic continues to shake up different aspects of daily life, and the gaming industry is no exception. Esports competitions were hugely impacted by the virus, including Overwatch, League of Legends, and Call of Duty, with Call of Duty League going completely online for the first time ever.
Luckily, the proceedings since the announcement to shift Call of Duty esports online has gone smoothly, all things considered. Now, Call of Duty League’s official YouTube channel put out a fun video explaining the upcoming playoffs bracket.
With the announcement that the upcoming Call of Duty esports environment was going completely online, Call of Duty League had to adapt and change pretty fluidly. In April, the League confirmed the 2020 season schedule which also detailed how events would be run in the new format. The playoffs are swiftly approaching as the event begins on August 19, with Championship weekend picking up shortly after on August 29. As such, the official Call of Duty League YouTube channel put together a video to inform fans of what the Playoff bracket is going to look like.
The video itself is a clear parody of cooking television shows, with professional Call of Duty player Anthony “Methodz” Zinni acting as the host and present of the video. The video breaks down the structure of the upcoming playoff bracket, the 12 teams participating, and how they’re seeded. The entirety of the playoffs will be streamed from the official Call of Duty League Twitch channel, kicking off on August 19 and lasting through August 23. Call of Duty League confirmed the dates weekend back in July, so teams have had plenty of time to prepare.
Interestingly, the dates for the championship event leaked ahead of time during an official Call of Duty League stream, meaning fans inadvertently found out ahead of time when the winner would be crowned. Fans also found out the championship prize during the leak, which is an astronomical 1.5 million dollars for the winning team. The prize pool is also the largest in Call of Duty history, with a combined total of 4.6 million dollars. Needless to say, there’s a lot at stake for the 12 different teams competing for the championship.
There are a few teams to look out for during the playoffs, with Atlanta Faze, the Chicago Huntsman, and the Florida Mutineers all waiting to face off against the winners of the early bracket matches. Alternatively, Toronto Ultra was the last home series before the playoffs, so they would definitely be a team to look out for. All in all, each of these 12 teams have some intense matches ahead of them this coming weekend.
