It was a big day for indie developers and the Nintendo Switch, with the Big N hosting a Direct focused on small games with big hearts. The Nintendo Indie World Showcase highlighted a wide array of indie titles for Switch fans, and among those featured is the adorable adventure game, Garden Story.
Players assume the role of Concord, a young grape fated to become the Guardian of the Grove. Concord must protect his friends from Rot, a creeping plague that threatens to destroy the Grove and all its inhabitants. The game features adventure and RPG elements, with a dash of Harvest Moon-style cultivation and foraging for good measure.
Garden Story, which was previously announced for Steam, is now on its way to the Nintendo Switch in 2021. No specifics on when next year the game will be available, but the announcement should be enough to put the game on a number of players’ radar.
While Garden Story is a game that was announced previously (albeit for another platform), some of the games in the Indie World Showcase were completely new, like the odd card-cheating game, Card Shark. The mix of new and previously announced titles kept the Direct full of surprises.
Garden Story‘s charming pixel art style is perfect for those that want something that feels nostalgic, but fresh. Some game outlets that have had hands-on time with the demo point to clever puzzles, well-written characters, and rewarding social links as big draws for the game. If what is heard through the grapevine is to be believed, this game could find itself on a number of Indie “Best Of” Lists when it releases next year.
Garden Story will be available on Steam and Nintendo Switch in 2021.
