Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 Rumored to Carry Huge Price Tag

With less than two weeks to go until the Nvidia GeForce Special Event, which is expected to include the official RTX 3090 and RTX 3080 announcements, the already intense hype surrounding Nvidia’s next generation Ampere powered graphics cards is only increasing. According to the latest rumor though, the hype is not the only thing getting bigger, with the launch price of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 expected to be a massive jump over the launch price of the current generation RTX 2080 Ti.

According to Chiphell forum user Wjm47196, who has a history of reliable leaks, the starting price for the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 in the U.S. will be an eye-watering $1399, with the Founder’s Edition coming in at $1499. This would mean the base model is launching with a 40% higher price tag than the equivalent RTX 2080 Ti did, costing $999 in 2018, while the Founder’s Edition cost $1199.

This price point could see custom variants of the RTX 3090 card clocking in at over $1500, while more premium variants would be likely to top the $2000 mark reached by some premium RTX 2080 Ti models. The main reason for the increased price point is believed to be the inclusion of a massive 24 GB of next generation GDDR6X RAM, which will see the RTX 3090 easily break the 1 TB per second barrier for memory bandwidth. In comparison, the RTX 2080 Ti launched with 11GB of GDDR6 RAM, and just over 600 GB per second bandwidth. Even if the RTX 3090 came with a smaller 12 GB as has been described in some rumors, it would still hit the 1 TB per second memory bandwidth mark, according to technical details shared by memory provider Micron.

The good news however, is that the increased price does appear to be supported by a corresponding boost in performance, with leaked benchmarks showing a reported 50% increase in performance over the RTX 2080 Ti. Other rumors also suggest that ray tracing performance could be up to four times faster than the current generation Turing based cards. There is also the question of the reported mystery chip revealed in a recent RTX 3090 PCB image leak, which may provide additional supporting functions to the main GPU, potentially for ray tracing performance.

While such gigantic price points are disappointing for gamers hoping to upgrade, the fact is that the RTX 3090 is likely to be the standard-bearer for consumer graphics performance for quite some time, particularly when it comes to ray tracing. Anyone who has the budget to consider buying the fastest consumer level graphics card in the world very soon after its launch, is likely to be undeterred by a 40% price hike.

The big question is whether the rest of the Ampere based cards will have equally high pricing, or whether Nvidia is simply charging an extra premium for its flagship. The other question is how long these price points will remain, given that AMD is also lining up its RDNA 2 based Navi 2X cards for later in the year.
