Rocksteady Studios is having a big moment, with the good side of its recent PR focused on the upcoming Suicide Squad game that is set to reveal official details at the DC FanDome event this weekend. However, some more serious news regarding sexism and harassment allegations have come to light at the studio, and it is currently working on an official response to these unsettling issues.
While Rocksteady officials have yet to release an official company statement, its official Twitter account recently published an anonymously-signed letter from seven women working at Rocksteady. The studio is currently under fire for reportedly failing to address harassment at Rocksteady. In late 2018, ten out of the studio’s sixteen female employees provided a letter detailing incidents of unwanted sexual advances, derogatory insults, and other inappropriate behavior directed at women, and claims that these issues had not been addressed even after being brought up to studio management.
The Rocksteady Twitter published what it says is an unsolicted, anonymous statement today that addresses the original letter which has since been publicized online. The most recent statement claims that Rocksteady did in fact address the women’s concerns when they brought up the sexist remarks and harassment in the studio, in the form of immediately starting “series of meetings” giving the women in the company a space to bring their concerns forward and for the whole studio to brainstorm ways to move forward.
Essentially, Rocksteady’s statement today claims that the issues were addressed right away and in a serious, thoughtful manner. It also alleges that the women who wrote the original letter detailing inappropriate behavior felt their privacy was being violated by the matter becoming so publicized. Basically, this statement is an attempt to exonerate Rocksteady and refute claims of wrongdoing.
As everyone involved in this issue has kept themselves anonymous, it’s unclear who is really bringing both letters forward, who is telling the truth, and what the involved parties’ agendas are. Whether or not this new letter truly is from female employees at Rocksteady, some people are pointing out that this letter pits two supposed groups of anonymous women against each other over whether sexism should be publicized. Sexism in the video games industry continues to be an issue, and even if an anonymous group of women did send this second letter, it does raise some question about Rocksteady’s focus.
It’s difficult to tell who is telling the truth here, but either way, there are a lot of questions left unanswered here. Rocksteady is not currently able to prove or disprove any of the allegations by publishing an anonymous letter, and with its motives under fire, something more concrete may have to happen to move public opinion of the studio one way or another.
