Among the nine holds that constitute the province of Skyrim in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, there’s The Pale. It’s known as one of the northern holds, with Dawnstar as its capital city. Likely, it’s name is inspired by the fact that most of its terrain is harsh, snowy mountains and plains with little greenery.
The Pale isn’t a very big hold, but it’s definitely an old one. It also has quite a few cool locations that players won’t find with the help of a marker. From finding extra loot to just standing at the peak of a beautiful mountain, here are ten hidden areas in the Pale the Dragonborn should visit.
10 Sunken Treasures
The waters of Skyrim should never be ignored, since they often carry interesting little details and treasure within them. The northern ocean in particular is stock full of cool places, random islands and even shipwrecks with forgotten loot buried inside.
Between Solitude and Dawnstar, north from the Wreck of the Brinehammer, which is marked with a boat icon, an unmarked shipwreck can be discovered with a leveled chest underwater nearby it, surrounded by a bunch of wooden crates.
9 Horker Standing Stones
Still in the Sea of Ghosts, this small island has a formation of rocks that most likely are remains of some type of Nordic ruins. It’s completely overrun with horkers, so travelers looking to find horker meat or tusks. For Hearthfire players, the tusks in particular are valuable.
Otherwise, the best part about this tiny dot of land is the presence of quicksilver and Nirnroot located nearby. The horker island is roughly north of the High Gate Ruins, and slightly towards east. It’s also right next to a shipwreck.
8 Bandit’s Hovel
Players looking to fight some bandits and get a bit of extra loot should head over to a small burned down house which is now overtaken by criminals. South of High Gate Ruins, and a bit towards east, they’ll come across this house in the snowy pine forest hills.
The area is easy to find when spotting the horse carriage that has been burned nearby it. Inside the actual house the player will find a leveled chest. The bandits will also be leveled, so make sure not to go in unprepared.
7 Barnacle Boat
Continue east and south from the Wreck of the Brinehammer, following the northern shoreline. Eventually, the player will stumble upon a small wooden boat which has been washed ashore no doubt by a storm or violent waves.
The area is guarded by Mudcrabs, but there’s a bit of loot here too, including a knapsack with some random loot, a scimitar (which might imply this boat belonged to a Redguard) and an Alteration skill book called Daughter of the Niben.
6 Dawnstar Frost Troll Den
Looking to fight a troll? Follow the shoreline west from Dawnstar, and a small indentation in the hills will turn out to be the den of a fearsome Frost Troll. Don’t go in unprepared or without some type of fire spell, as trolls can be devastating at low levels.
Aside from getting Troll Fat from the Troll itself, the player will also find a chest within the den. Inside, a Block skill book called Death Blow of Abernanit can be found for some extra skill point progress.
5 Lover’s Tent
Those wanting to get married quickly in the game and not knowing where to start should head over to the Lover’s Tent, located east of Dawnstar. It’s easy to find by following the shoreline, until a tent with two bedrolls, some wine and blue mountain flowers comes into view.
Inside, the Amulet of Mara can be found, which is required in order to attract a potential partner. Be careful, however, since getting to the location requires passing through a horde of horkers, which can be surprisingly annoying to fight when found in groups.
4 A Bloody Trail
Murder and death in Skyrim isn’t particularly rare, but it’s a bit of a shock to come across a gruesome sight like this in the peaceful pine forests of the Pale’s snowy hillside. Far up north from Volunruud, up in the mountains and hills, a bloody trail can be discovered in the snow with two wood elves lying dead on the ground.
It would be interesting to know what exactly transpired here. However, the real treat in this find is the Treasure Map VI which can be looted off one of the elves. The treasure is found in Korvanjund, in the location drawn on its picture.
3 Mammoth Graveyard
For a location that’s simply cool-looking, why not visit the Mammoth Graveyard? The sight alone is both impressive and gruesome, as dozens of clusters of massive bones and skulls lie half buried within the tundra soil of the Pale. Head west from the Loreius Farm in the southern parts of the Pale, where the grass is much greener.
There’s nothing of great interest here, although a quest is related to this area. Froki Whetted-Blade will instruct the Dragonborn to fight a range of Guardian beasts, including a mammoth which will be discovered in this area.
2 Julianos’ Fallen
Shrines are an essential part of Skyrim when it comes to getting nice bonuses and blessings. For mages in particularly, finding a shrine of Julianos is very beneficial, as he rules over values like wisdom and logic. By activating his shrine, the player will boost their maximum magicka pool by 25 points for roughly eight hours.
One shrine of Julianos is located in the snow, next to a skeleton that’s clutching on to the stone. It’s located east of Tumble Arc Pass, north if Shearpoint and northwest of Irkngthand. As a small location it might initially be hard to spot, but accessing it shouldn’t be too difficult.
1 Wayward Peak Summit
Skyrim is full of incredible mountains and tall peaks. In fact, it was one of its main selling points when the game was first being advertised, and acted as a nice contrast to the incredibly flat and monotone terrain of Cyrodiil in Oblivion.
Players who want to enjoy gorgeous views of the world should head over to Wayward Peak Summit, one of the highest points in the entire map. The peak is marked with a tattered brown flag, and a bit of loot can be found next to it, including a satchel and a leveled weapon.
