Following in the footsteps of the surprisingly successful #ReleaseTheSnyderCut campaign, the DC Cinematic Universe fanbase has moved onto its next rallying cry: #ReleaseTheAyerCut. Now that Justice League is finally getting to be realized as pictured by the original director Zack Snyder, fans of the similarly-maligned Suicide Squad are hoping David Ayer gets his own opportunity, and the people involved are taking notice.
One person in particular, Karen Fukuhara, has responded to the movement directly shortly before the upcoming DC FanDome event. The actress for the film’s version of vigilante anti-hero Katana spoke about the movement with several press outlets, remarking on how likely such a release could be, and if it should even be attempted.
Speaking to Radiotimes.com, Fukuhara expressed a cautious excitement over the idea: “I always support more Katana because I love her, but I personally have never seen The Ayer Cut before at all, so I don’t know what it would have been like. Obviously, the original script was a little bit different.” Ayer himself has taken to Twitter as of late, commenting that his original vision for the film was ripped away by studio interference, writing: “After the BVS reviews shell shocked the leadership at the time, and the success of Deadpool – My soulful drama was beaten into a ‘comedy'”
Karen Fukuhara was unable to say much about the original version, however. In her interview she pondered whether or not it would be even be a good idea to dive back into the project: “It’s hard to say because we all worked so hard on the movie and we had such a fun time filming it. Maybe it should be left untouched, but at the same time I’m intrigued. So, I don’t know, it’s both sides of the coin I guess.” Fukuhara herself seems to have an affinity for comic-based projects, with her most recent appearance as Kimiko in Amazon’s version of The Boys.
Whether or not the Ayer Cut is even feasible is another question. While the upcoming release of the Snyder Cut proves that revisiting a film in a significant rework is certainly possible, it does come with significant expense. While Snyder and the Justice League have a high enough profile that Warner Bros. is willing to risk the investment, Suicide Squad doesn’t have quite the same brand awareness or hardcore audience, at least not yet. Until someone more closely associated with Warner Bros. chooses to comment on the discourse, it seems that the Ayer Cut will continue to be entirely hypothetical.
