The Witcher 3 Mod Turns Geralt Into Overwatch’s Genji | Game Rant

Much like Skyrim before it, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a title that has received a second wind thanks to the support of its modding community. The boundless creativity of the collective internet often leads to outlandish crossovers, however.

The Witcher 3 was released in the spring of 2015 and has gone on to become one of the most decorated titles of the outgoing console generation. In fact, Geralt’s third adventure holds up remarkably well in 2020, though some fans, having exhausted every standard encounter on offer in Wild Hunt and its expansions, are turning to modding to breathe fresh life into the title. Most of these additions make subtle graphical tweaks, or impose extra challenges on Geralt, but sometimes, the results are a little odder.

Case in point: Modder Hackeraxe has created a patch for The Witcher 3 that allows Geralt of Rivia to step into the sleek, high-tech armor of Overwatch’s cyborg ninja, Genji Shimada. The mod doesn’t change Geralt’s character model outright, but rather imports several pieces of armor that will combine to make the White Wolf look like the Overwatch hero. But it is best not to mix and match Northern Realms garb with the robotic ninja gear, even in the pursuit of new heights of Witcher fashion. Hackeraxe cautions that “Geralt’s limbs start falling off” unless you wear the full set.

Genji isn’t the only striking character to visit the world of The Witcher, however. Thanks to modders, players can be Guts, from the grimdark manga Berserk, in The Witcher 3, as well. Given their shared calling of monster hunting, Guts may seem to make a little more sense in Geralt’s world. But there is a way the high tech armor’s presence could be explained.

When Ciri relays her story to Geralt, she describes an world that sounds an awful lot like Night City, the setting of developer CD Projekt Red’s forthcoming title, Cyberpunk 2077. And given that Geralt’s sword is referenced in Cyberpunk 2077it seems plausible that some kind of transference is possible. Admittedly, Overwatch and Cyberpunk are two very different visions of the future, but maybe Ciri was one lucky portal away from finding herself facing down Talon agents.

It is probably healthiest not to try rationalizing the implications of every outlandish mod, however. Trying to parse Thomas the Tank Engine’s presence in Sekiro, Skyrim, and Fallout 4 seems like a nightmarish line of inquiry.

Regardless of how gamers feel about Genji’s armor appearing in The Witcher 3, the patch represents the tremendous promise of the modding community. Even though it is now nearly a decade old, Skyrim can be breathtaking when heavily modded, and it is exciting to think about what The Witcher 3 could look like in another five years.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is available now for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
