Though, for how long the game has been out, it’s surprising to see how many new people are buying the game after all this time.
Ever since Animal Crossing’s official reveal at E3 2019, many fans were excitedly anticipating this game’s release. This would make New Horizons the first new Animal Crossing game released in eight years, with the previous installment being Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Though, ever since its release, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has been met with widespread success and popularity.
The sales figures between August 10th and August 16th for Famitsu magazine are in, showcasing what games have sold the most during this time frame. Famitsu, of course, is a popular Japanese gaming magazine that features statistics, as well as original articles written by industry professionals. For example, Masahiro Sakurai, the director of Super Smash Bros., has written multiple articles for Famitsu in the past.
In any case, it was shown that Animal Crossing: New Horizons remains at the top of the list as the highest selling game in Japan, followed swiftly behind by Ring Fit Adventure. It seems people are still lining up to buy both of these games in Japan. In fact, eight out of the ten top spots contained Nintendo games, including games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
In addition to game sales, Famitsu also showed off the sales of each console and the Nintendo Switch topped the sales chart. It may be due to the popularity of the Switch in Japan or the accessible nature of the console. However, the overall increase in sales of both the Nintendo Switch and Animal Crossing: New Horizons are almost certainly due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
While Japan has been more lenient in terms of its lock down orders, many people in Japan and around the world were looking for something to do during quarantine and Animal Crossing: New Horizons arrived at exactly the perfect time. This is largely the reason why Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the fastest selling Nintendo Switch game of all time. Though, the love and appreciation the fans have for the game is a result of the game itself.
