Over the last several months, we’ve seen plenty of big game announcements from the likes of Microsoft and Sony, particularly with the next generation of consoles set to be released. But, with this year’s E3 canceled, these reveals have been spread out through multiple events, all of which have received some build-up.
However, some games can potentially slip under the radar due to not being part of any of these big presentations, with their announcements simple being released into the wild and left for people to discover themselves. For example, yesterday, Chinese studio Game Science Studios released gameplay footage for its upcoming action game Black Myth: Wu Kong.
Word of it has gradually spread, though, and the game is becoming slightly more recognized, and rightly so because for what is pre-alpha footage, it looks surprisingly good, both in terms of visuals and gameplay.
The footage is roughly 13 minutes long and is clearly reminiscent of action games like Dark Souls and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, though whether it will feature those titles’ excruciating difficulty is another story.
Combat is certainly faster and more fluid than the former, with demonstrations of one-on-one fights, fights against a large group, and a boss battle against a giant wolf enemy, with the game appearing to tease possibly fighting even bigger enemies. The main character wields a staff rather than any sort of bladed weapon, though it’s possible that the player will gradually acquire more weapons as they progress, as demonstrated with a fiery staff they obtain from an enemy.
Rather than be a separate weapon that can be swapped to, however, it looks like it’s instead associated with a transformation. The game provides two examples, where the monkey hero turns into a wolf to wield the fire weapon and, during a group fight, turns into a much bigger lion-looking creature to deal with a pack of enemies using only his claws. These transformations seem to be temporary, judging by the timer that appears in the bottom left of the screen. This could be a core mechanic, with the character also turning into a cicada to fly through the air, completely unnoticed by enemies, which could indicate that there are far more of these planned for the final game.
Despite the game’s impressively realistic-looking visuals, Black Myth is obviously aiming for something far more fantastical and is clearly based on the Chinese novel Journey to the West. Most of us are very familiar with media that has been heavily influenced by it, with the most obvious example being the original Dragon Ball manga, though it left those influences behind somewhat once it became the more sci-fi oriented Dragon Ball Z.
There’s no word on a release date or even if the game will release outside of China but, hopefully, it will be available worldwide given the positive responses it has received so far. As for platforms, Game Science has said that it’s targeting releases for PC and “all mainstream host platforms,” which says to us that it will likely release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Maybe don’t expect a Nintendo Switch release, though.
Black Myth: Wukong is currently in development for PC and unspecified platforms.
