Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Keeps SBMM, Says Leaker

After a week of bizarre teaser videos, Activision has finally announced Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War in an official capacity, with the trailer coming next Wednesday, August 26. Besides its Cold War setting, very little is known about Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and what it will entail, but one leaker has made the claim that the new game will retain one of Modern Warfare‘s most controversial features.

According to frequent Call of Duty series leaker Tom Henderson, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will use skill-based matchmaking in its versus multiplayer mode. According to Henderson, Black Ops Cold War‘s SBMM is “EXACTLY” the same as the system used by Modern Warfare developers for that game’s multiplayer. This is no doubt going to disappoint some fans, though it should be stressed that SBMM has not actually been confirmed by Activision, Raven Software, or Treyarch, so fans should take this information with a grain of salt.

For the uninitiated, skill-based matchmaking, or SBMM, has been a very controversial topic for online multiplayer games in recent years. Its intention is so that players are constantly going against those of a similar skill level, meaning players are no longer put in lobbies where they are far superior to the competition or alternatively, far worse. Some players don’t like how SBMM makes every game “sweaty,” and others have criticized the impact it has on one’s enjoyment when playing in a party with a friend who is of a vastly different skill level. Regardless of how fans feel about SBMM, though, it looks like it’s here to stay.

But again, nothing is really known about Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War‘s multiplayer in an official capacity. While the first Black Ops Cold War trailer has been revealed, it mostly consists of live-action clips of real-world historical events from the Cold War, with virtually no details about the gameplay.

While nothing official has been announced in regards to Black Ops Cold War‘s gameplay, fans can make a few educated guesses about what it will feature based on past Call of Duty games. Black Ops Cold War having a single-player campaign is virtually guaranteed, as is its inclusion of the standard Call of Duty versus multiplayer experience. It’s quite likely that the new game will have a co-op mode of some kind as well. Leakers have suggested that Black Ops Cold War will have Zombies like past games in the series for its co-op mode, but that has yet to be confirmed.

More information on Black Ops Cold War from Treyarch and Raven Software should come on August 26.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is in development for unspecified platforms.
