Call of Duty: Warzone Famas Underbarrel Shotgun Controversy Explained

Every Call of Duty game has the occasional overpowered weapon, which is usually an inevitability with every shooter anyway. It happened with the Model 1886s in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the MP7 in Modern Warfare 3, and ironically the FAMAS in Black Ops. That irony is realized in this year’s Call of Duty: Warzone, with the FR. 5.56 (aka FAMAS) dealing with a serious underbarrel shotgun problem. And not just any underbarrel shotgun, but specifically the FR 5.56’s underbarrel shotgun is overpowered.

Likely due to a slew of balance changes in Season 5, several Call of Duty: Warzone streamers and YouTubers have started pointing out the problematic attachment and its insane effective range. Fully armored players from around 15 meters away are being one-shot by the underbarrel shotgun, and luckily a fix is due out in the near future. Here’s why every player is breaking out the FAMAS and its underbarrel shotgun in Warzone currently, and how it won’t last long.

The prevailing theory, and probable cause, of this crazy attachment is that one of the Season 5 buffs had some additional and unintentional ramifications. In the patch notes for Warzone specifically, it was noted that Season 5 made a specific change to the FR 5.56’s range. The patch “increased effective damage range for the FR 5.56,” presumably to improve the normal ammunition’s effectiveness at medium to long range. Unfortunately, it seems that change may have been made for both the standard ammunition, as well as any projectile attachments on the gun.

As a result, the underbarrel shotgun has insane range when only the FAMAS itself was supposed to receive a damage fall off buff. Several clips have been making the rounds across the Warzone community, causing an uproar. And rightfully so, the range as seen above is  ridiculous for a one shot hit from a shotgun. At the moment, that underbarrel shotgun on the FAMAS is capable of a full-damage spread pattern as far as 15 meters, making it a potent shotgun at any distance. Of course, anyone who wants to get in on the attachment’s absurdity won’t have much longer to enjoy it.

As of August 17, Infinity Ward has been made aware of the issue with the unintended buff and is already working on a fix. As crazy as this attachment has become in Warzone, hopefully soon that will no longer be the case. Presumably the fix will only apply to the underbarrel attachment, as the actual FR 5.56 genuinely needed the range buff. Not many Warzone players utilized the FAMAS, as it was often supplanted by several other assault rifles like the M4A1 or the Oden.

If the actual rifle itself wasn’t overshadowed by the underbarrel shotgun, perhaps the FAMAS wouldn’t be a more popular pick. That being said, the underbarrel and the FAMAS itself are probably going to become unviable after patch. More than likely the damage fall off will be increased greatly to account for the shotgun’s current high power at range. Call of Duty has a propensity for making shotguns either incredibly good or terrible, so an underbarrel attachment likely won’t receive special treatment either. At this point, it really just depends on how Infinity Ward corrects the issue.

In the case of Warzone, the two best shotguns would be Origin 12 and the R9-0, but even those guns pale in comparison to many of the ARs and Snipers above them. Plus Warzone has never been too kind to close-range weapons anyway, so the FR 5.56 is definitely going to receive a huge nerf soon. In all fairness this likely means the FR 5.56 isn’t going to receive much usage in Warzone anymore either. Realistically players were only using that AR for the buffed shotgun, as the rifle itself just isn’t that good. The damage fall off buff still doesn’t improve the fact that the FAMAS is overall weaker compared to some of the other heavy-hitting ARs.

Warzone players still have a shot to enjoy the incredible high-range shotgun for a bit longer, but this problematic FR 5.56 attachment won’t be sticking around for long.

Call of Duty: Warzone is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
