Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot‘s base game was widely received in a positive light, but even fans of the title are able to recognize its flaws. One of the major complaints about the game was the way it introduced and then immediately sidelined certain characters, with the most grievous examples of this being Android 21 and Bonyu. Now that Golden Frieza and the events of Resurrection F might be adapted as a boss battle episode for DLC 2, there’s a chance that Bonyu could make her first actually legitimate appearance in the game, giving Bandai Namco and CyberConnect2 a chance to develop her as a character.
One of the main marketing points for Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot was the introduction of a new character designed by Akira Toriyama himself. Bonyu was said to be a former member of the Ginyu Force, and before launch not much was known about her. Within the game, she was underused, as she only appeared in a training simulation where players could battle her to grind experience. This wasn’t even the actual Bonyu, but rather a reconstruction of her based on battle data found in one of the Ginyu Force’s Attack Pods. Needless to say, fans were a bit disappointed about this.
Though the antagonist of the upcoming DLC has yet to be officially revealed, there is strong evidence pointing towards it being Golden Frieza. For starters, it would be the next logical step following the events of the first DLC, and recent V Jump scans showed Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta and Goku doing battle against Frieza Force soldiers. This doesn’t confirm Golden Frieza, as Frieza Force Soldiers can be found in free roam throughout different areas in the game, but it does support that theory, especially since the 50-wave battle is something new. If so, this could mean good things for Bonyu.
The other running theory is that Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot will skip Golden Frieza, instead opting to use Hit and the Universe 6 Saga as the source material for DLC 2. This would make sense given that Golden Frieza was never adapted in the Dragon Ball Super manga and the arc doesn’t add much to the story, but would definitely severely hurt Bonyu’s chances of making a comeback. The leaks pointing towards Golden Frieza are fairly substantial, however, so this theory seems more and more unlikely with each passing moment. With any luck, an official announcement will clear up confusion soon.
It is well known that Bonyu is a former member of the Ginyu Force, but it is never made clear what she did after leaving that group. According to records, Bonyu left the Ginyu Force because she thought their poses were stupid, and preferred to take a more serious approach, but Ginyu and the others generally speak very highly of her in terms of her combat ability and intelligence. It isn’t stated outright, but it seems as though she rivals Ginyu in terms of power and acted as the brains of the group, being an excellent strategist in combat.
While her whereabouts since quitting the Ginyu Force remain unknown, there isn’t anything that outright supports that she left the Frieza Force as a whole. It is strange that Frieza didn’t call on Bonyu’s help during the battles on Namek, but for most of that saga it was clear that the evil emperor wasn’t concerned about the Z Warriors at all due to his immense power. It could be that she was somewhere else in the galaxy, subduing another planet or off on some other mission. If she is in fact still alive and still a Frieza Supporter, it would make sense for her to show up in the DLC.
In the leaks showing Goku and Vegeta battling Frieza Force soldiers, there is a counter in the top left corner of the screen. According to translations of the Japanese text, this counter says 12/50 Frieza’s Army, implying that the Saiyans were battling with Frieza’s Army as they did in the Resurrection F arc. This seems to all but confirm Golden Frieza as the main antagonist of DLC 2, but also shows that this DLC will be at least a little different from the first one.
If there is in fact a new mission or story in which the player fights of Frieza’s army, this would be the perfect time for Bonyu to make an actual appearance. Fans will remember Ginyu’s surprise return during this saga, in which he finally manages to body change out of his frog form and take over Tagoma’s body. Perhaps in the Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot canon, Bonyu could play this role instead of Tagoma and Ginyu, acting as the powerful adversary the Z Warriors must face before finally getting to fight Golden Frieza and end the invasion.
The biggest problem with this theory is the power scaling of Bonyu when compared to Goku and Vegeta at this point. Though she was clearly indicated to be powerful, potentially one of the strongest members of the Ginyu Force, there’s no way she was any more powerful than Namek Saga Frieza, as at that time she likely still served under the tyrant. This means that her power couldn’t have been much greater than a Super Saiyan’s at best, and even that is hopeful. It’s possible that she could have trained in the time between then and now, but reaching god-like levels of power seems unlikely.
It doesn’t seem possible that Bonyu would be able to provide even the slightest challenge to Goku and Vegeta in their Super Saiyan Blue forms, which makes her inclusion seem fruitless. Though fans would love to see her developed more as a character, it is best to keep expectations low for the time being. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot power level ratings are strange and unpredictable at times, though, so it could be that she does return in grand fashion and provides a real challenge to players as a sort of mini boss before fighting Golden Frieza, but only time will tell.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
