Charmander may be everyone’s favorite fire type starter in Pokemon, and it’s easy to understand why. Not only is the chameleon-inspired monster adorable, but it also grows up to be the powerful Charizard, one of the most iconic Pokemon in the franchise. That is only partly why Charmander is currently trending on Twitter, however.
Earlier today, the Pokemon GO Twitter account held a practice vote for which Pokemon will be featured for September Community Day. Last week, Niantic revealed that fans would get to choose between Charmander and Grimer for the September event. Several fans took to Twitter to voice their support – or opposition – for a Charmander Community Day.
Community Day is a Pokemon GO event that occurs one day each month. During the event, the Pokemon that is featured will appear more frequently. The chance that a player will catch a shiny version of that Pokemon is also greatly increased.
Many fans responded to the practice vote with the hashtags #TeamCharizard and #TeamCharmander to show their support. But several others turned out in opposition, saying that Grimer should be picked instead because Charmander was already featured for Community Day. Grimer has not yet had a Community Day of its own, while Charmander was featured in 2018. Grimer fans also complained that shiny Charmanders are already relatively easy to find. Some included screen shots of all the shiny Charmanders and Charizards they had as proof of how easily available the Pokemon is.
The Charmander supporters fired back by asserting that many newer players have not caught a shiny Charmander yet. They also made a blunt statement against Grimer fans: Grimer and Muk are simply not as cool as Charmander and Charizard.
While the number of responses against another Charmander Community Day seemed to outnumber those in favor, it is difficult to predict which Pokemon fans will ultimately choose. Charmander, after all, is one of the most popular Pokemon in the franchise, so it is easy to see fans choosing it over Grimer. But Charmander’s popularity can evidently work against it, as several Grimer fans complained that the starter is overrated. Grimer still has not had its own Community Day, giving fans another reason to vote in its favor.
The Pokemon GO Twitter account will hold the official vote on August 22. Niantac recently revealed that fans will also get to choose October’s Community Day Pokemon, with Caterpie and Porygon on the bracket. Niantic has not announced when fans will get to vote on the October event, but it will likely take place in September.
Pokemon GO is available on iOS and Android.
