Rob ‘Gronk’ Gronkowski is one of the most well-known tight ends in NFL history. He is a three-time Superbowl Champion, five-time Pro Bowler, and four-time All Pro player. But not only is Gronk a masterful and powerful player in the NFL, he apparently is pretty good at golf, even ambidextrously, according to WWE’s the Miz.
Game Rant recently sat down with “The Miz,” 2010 WWE champion and huge golf fan to talk about PGA TOUR 2K21. In doing so, The Miz shared an interesting story about how he once played golf with Gronk, who was recently a part of a COVID relief team,
The Miz has been golfing since he was a child, as the sport was a bonding experience with him and his father after his parents had divorced. Miz has been golfing since the fifth grade, although he claims that his game hasn’t improved much since that time. The sport is a great way for him to be outdoors, enjoy the tranquility, and get away from the daily grind, which is part of the reason why 2K reached out to him to promote PGA TOUR 2K21.
With The Miz being a WWE superstar, and someone who was just confirmed to be apart of the roster for WWE 2K Battlegrounds, it seemed likely that he would have had the opportunity to play on some of the beautiful courses that are in PGA TOUR 2K21 itself. When Game Rant asked Miz about this, it reminded him of when he played in the Travelers Championship Celebrity Pro-Am, in which he teamed up with Von Taylor (professional athlete), Joe Pesci (actor and musician), and Gronk himself.
Miz recalls shooting a 300-yard drive during the 10th hole on the course, and after that, he wanted to just walk away for the day as he was on top of the world. But when playing with a jokester and ultimate competitor like Rob Gronkowski, who just came back to the NFL after a small retirement, it seemed like only a matter of time before the teammates for the Pro-Am would have to challenge each other.
The Miz is left-handed, and Gronk happens to be right-handed. So in the middle of the tournament, with all eyes on the duo, Miz and Gronk traded clubs. Miz now had to swing right-handed, and Gronk was swinging left-handed. The result was a score about as close as it gets, with Miz scoring a 9, and Gronk scoring an 8. Gronk won, by one.
Regardless of whether it was a par 3, 4, or 5, scoring an 8 or a 9 is not impressive by any means, but doing so with the opposite-handed clubs is uproariously funny. It makes all the sense in the world that a WWE superstar and the trickster of the NFL would go anti-traditional golf for a moment and challenge each other to an off the wall wager. The Miz still laughs at this great story, and recalls “Von Taylor looking at us going, ‘what the hell are you guys doing? We’re supposed to be going for the win!'”
When asked about how Gronk is as a golfer overall, regardless of his handiness, The Miz said that “I think Gronk is good at everything. He’s one of those talents that when he focuses and hones, he just has that athletic ability. I feel like if Gronk played golf for the first time ever, he’d be good at it. That’s the type of caliber of person he is, he is just good at things.”
The polar bear of the NFL has mauled defensive backs for years, while golf requires a lot different kind of finesse, flow, and rhythm, but apparently Gronk has all of that too. PGA TOUR 2K21 has some deep and fun multiplayer components, so perhaps Miz can get his rematch with the soon-to-be Hall of Fame tight end.
When it comes to Gronk vs Miz in the WWE ring, however, the result may have been different. During his brief retirement from the NFL, Gronk started a professional wrestling career and Miz says,
“I was hoping he’d stay around a little longer so I could eventually beat him!”
When talking about the possibility of Gronk going back to wrestling once he retires from catching balls from Tom Brady in Tampa Bay, Miz seems to be ready for that match made in heaven of him vs Gronkowski. Only time will tell if that every comes to fruition.
