Several big budget films have begun to swing back into production around the globe, not least of which is DC’s hotly anticipated The Batman starring Robert Pattinson. Reportedly, Warner Bros. Studio Leavesden is preparing for production to restart in September, after it was put on hold back in March.
It makes sense that the studio is looking to begin production again, with construction for the sets having begun last month according to reports, and more news expected for the film’s upcoming panel at DC FanDome. Another Warner project, The Matrix 4, has already begun shooting in Berlin with the help of Village Roadshow.
According to director Matt Reeves, when production of the film was halted earlier in the year, they already had about a quarter of the footage shot and ready, but weren’t looking to edit anything until they were done. When asked what he planned to do with the time, and if the shutdown would cause any changes, he responded that he would mostly use the time to reflect on the tone of the film: “It happens any time you shoot anything. The unexpected — happy accidents and things you didn’t quite expect: That is the lightning in a bottle for something that is alive. I would say that the changes really have to do with ‘Oh, seeing the tone of this.'”
While the pandemic has made things difficult for all aspects of the film industry, the time can at least be put to some use allowing the creators to consider the direction of the project and how best to achieve their vision. Some things are more difficult to work around, however, including the film’s release, which had to be delayed from June 2021 back to October 1, 2021. The decision to film in the UK was likely made for a variety of convenience reasons, including the fact that there are no quarantine requirements for film crews in the UK, where film production workers are deemed essential. Hopefully the cast and crew will be able to make the film as close to their vision has possible while staying safe and healthy.
The Batman is planned to hit theaters on October 1st of 2021.
